While driving on freeway other day, my dash blacked out completely. Car lost power and shut off. Luckily I was able to coast over to right shoulder. Once stopped, car started right up. No hesitation, no strain. Drove off as if nothing had happened. Dashed blacked out before I don't recall what dealer said. Since then apparently that dealership changed ownership and most previous repair records are lost, via different dealership. Torque showed dtc codes P1000, and U0100. I had V-link obd reader installed so.....

Next day I look under hood. I see passenger side of engine compartment coated in ??????. Looks like oil and dirt from a blown seal somewhere. But where? The crap even covered my CAI prefilter.

Dealer tech writer trying to sand from outside. While I agree some sand/dirt is under hood. But it's all loose stuff that blows off. As in stuff trapped in air box.

Still waiting for dealer prognosis. A host of other things being checked. All outstanding recalls, checking PTU, transmission, and oddball noise.

1. Has anyone had engine shut off under load

2. What could be blowing crap inside engine bay passenger side

3. I've heard of hot pipes repairing certain seals from leaking. Could this be from that

4. Could this obd reader be the cause? My last Chinese reader seemingly contributed to dash errors. Now I'm wondering is this new one doing the same again?

Belly pan installed as I recalled. The Chinese reader just as this one was causing network error codes. I may be forced to go back with obdlink mx

That's nasty!  Glad you are Ok!  The oily stuff MIGHT be from a leaky turbo oil feed line.  The codes are generic, and relate to the effect of the engine shutdown rather than the cause.

Did you by any chance hit some rough road or bumps just before?  One case of an F150 losing power due to railroad tracks (turned out to be the starter fuse (?)):

Certainly possible the OBD adapter is to blame for the "blackout", though usually all kinds of lights light up in the dash instead.  I don't think it is fast enough to disrupt the PCM's activities, but if it is sending stray data, that could do it.  Haven't had any issues with the unit I have, have been running with Torque Pro (1/10th of a second polling) and Forscan (anywhere from 70-100 ms data stream return rate).  Maybe the Amazon reviews have a note in there about this ...

Dave its very unlikely that its obd adapter related, please take a look at pic #3 and look how loose your intake charge pipe clamp is,looks like its going to fall off.  Z

Forgot to mention:  you just upgraded to 12" subs, right?  Any possibility the power demand was at a peak just before the "blackout"?

SHOdded  brings up a good point. Awhile back my back my work van had a bad ground wire. It was corroded through on the inside, it looked completely normal at first glance.  It did also light every light on the dash and stall the engine. Only I was not able to restart. Maybe check all your power and ground wires. Or at least check resistance with a meter.

Are ALL dealer techs, mechanics and writers bone heads?

Dealer saying its road grime! WHAT? 24 hours of traveling maybe 50 miles total produced this? With absolutely no signs of anything on front grill. REALLY? On a car that has a belly pan! For this amount of crap to come from road grime, the car would have to have been driven in reverse, through an oil field, with hood open, belly pan off, with mud tires, and firewall missing in action!

I am at a loss for words right now.

What does your hood insulation pad look like?
Does your a/c work properly. Looks like you blew an a/c line and the oil from the refrigerant went everywhere.

Great point Glock, would also check to see if that dirt has migrated on top of the manifold, curious to see if its that (dirty)UNDER the engine cover.  Z

I will check the AC on my run tonight. That sounds like the best logical answer.

But aside from pix, rest of under hood looks good. Dealer insists road grime. Also made the statement "these cars will never seal 100%" So I said if you designed these cars to leak, then I can't wait for the class action to start. I told dealer if they just cannot find a problem is ok. But to blow smoke with "its road grime" is a cop out to me.

One thing I really hate at mechanics now is, there are VERY FEW real mechanics that can diagnose a car before a computer. The dealer answer for everything is, there is no code for it so everything is fine!

I will stop by another dealership tomorrow just for kicks and giggles. But will clean engine bay in coming days.

Take a good look around where the a/c lines connect to the a/c condenser.  If it looks like this is the source and your a/c is working well it is most likely the transmission cooler that is leaking.

The transmission cooler is the top rows of the a/c condenser unit and this design has experienced leaking issues across a few of Ford's model lines including the Edge and Taurus.  I am on the 3rd a/c condenser/transmission cooler on my '08 Taurus X (237k+ miles) due to this.

Im assuming ur belt is fine but I have seen belts shred and coat the engine comp with crap.  No way that's road grime.  Especially with the engine cover below.  Mine stays super clean.
