Hey guys,
Been looking at getting a 170 degree thermostat (especially since it's Black Friday/cyber Monday time).
I see that unleashed has a thermostat that is about $20 cheaper than the Reische.
Any opinions on one vs the other? Known/noticeable differences between them? I've read good reviews on both.
Thanks guys.
I have my Reische-stat for well over 3 years now and IMHO its a quality solid piece for sure and is either made in Germany or USA and would not compromise for a rat stat etc and would avoid any such cheaper alternatives, replica and you can always check the for sale section here on the forum. Z
I'm pretty happy with my LME 160....

Thanks, looks to be about a $10 dollar difference between unleased with the sale, and the Reische from a few different mustang sites (its the same part as on the 03/04 cobra).
Ill probably go with the reische since I know its made in USA and the warranty/reviews for them, plus knowing they have been around for a while.

Based on the research I've done, a 160 is a bit drastic for a DD car, especially once that sees cold winters. Plus some of the stuff I read referencing the LME not actually operating fully as it should.
170 degree seems like a good performance bump, and from a well known brand, with ample research. I've always had a bit of a problem with LME anyways though, based on their attitude in the mustang scene and dealings I have had with them in the past. I'm not saying their product is bad, but I personally try to stay away from them.
I never asked Torrie to confirm, but I thought his 170 tstat was a Reische? I looked at all the images on the Reische website, and mine had all the same markings. It's very possible I'm wrong. If memory serves, the tstat I bought from him was drop shipped from another vendor (can't remember which one) and the rest of the stuff (X4, plugs, filter) came together with Unleashed Tuning return address.

Hmm. I'll shoot him an email and see what he says. That would be awesome and even cheaper for the Reische.

Glad to hear that, but like I said, I don't think a 160 is in the cards for me.

I have a 170 for mine but am not running it anymore. Not sure what I am losing but I didn't want to have to mess with pulling it I have to take it to the dealer for warranty work. I've tried a couple different methods but I end up dumping at least a half cup of antifreeze on the motor while doing it.

Haha yeah, I got the impression he isn't super talkative when I talked to him about tuning last year. This time I asked specifically what brand it was, and mentioned that there were rumors it may have been a Reische. But all he said was "its not"
Oh well, I've got one one the way that I know is a Reische, so I'm happy.
When you pull the tstat housing, make sure you prop it up as high as you can to keep additional coolant from running out. I walked away from mine to find a better suited container to fit next to the block before pulling the OE stat and the hose slipped down. Probably drained just over a half gallon into my driveway before I caught it. Whoops...

I know the one I got from Torrie/Unleashed came in very generic packaging with no indication of who actually made it. It was a small cardboard box with brown paper packing. I still have it in my garage because I'm keeping my oil fill cap in it now that I have a CSS.
EDIT: I just e-mailed Torrie about what brand thermostat he sells for the 170 transverse 3.5L EcoBoost, and he replied simply: "I buy them from a firm in NC." Not super confidence inspiring. **sigh** That is the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back for me. YMMV.

Already did, and he has been super awesome. :) Brad's service has absolutely been second to none.
Back to thermostats! ;)
Have there been any known problems with the generic, non-Reische thermostats that I should be concerned about? I've already learned an expensive lesson, so I might as well keep digging the hole if it might save me down the road... LOL
I think ZSHO was on the right track with Rat Stat thermostat coming from Unleashed.
I messaged the Rat Stat gmail account on the box in the post below, and already got a response from Robert. He stated his thermostats are built from the same parts as the Reische (sourced from Stant), and he's based out of Carthage, NC.
EDIT (again): Robert at Rat Stat confirmed that he provides thermostats to Torrie.

Guess I coulda saved a few more dollars then. Oh well, that's nice to know. I've heard no bad reviews of the unleashed 170, rat stat, or even the LME 160. Afaik everyone with an upgraded thermostat has been happy with the performance.
I'd say you are good to go with yours.

And glad to hear you got the ball rolling with Brad, he amazes me with his every tune. Each time I don't think it can get any better, and I'm amazed again.
Does "sourcing the same parts" mean that Rat Stat and Reische are not making mods themselves?

Could be. Or atleast maybe the main internals? Would explain your 3D having Stant Markings.

Great question. I see on the Reische website they say:
"Our FORD-4D, FORD-G5 & FORD-50 thermostats are custom made with the same size diaphragm and bypass control as the OEM units. Each of our thermostats is modified by hand using only U.S. made parts and then quality inspected to ensure consistent opening temps. These t-stats are the only ones specifically designed to fit these applications making them the best performing low temp units on the market!"I'm not sure how they're "modified" at either place. I also went on the Stant website (www.stant.com (http://www.stant.com)) and looked at their application guide. I did not see a 170 degree option for a 2013 Explorer, Taurus, Flex or Interceptor. They had 180 (OE), 188, and 190. Maybe the "modification" is to take the guts out of some other t-stat and put it in the OE cage?
I wish I had taken pictures of my Rat Stat before I installed it, but I did compare to all the Reische images when I received it, and all the stampings and numeric identifiers were identical. I just assumed that's what I was sent. It does support the possibility that they
could be built from the same parts. I have no idea what the performance tolerance can be on a thermostat, but perhaps the benefit of the Reische is that they appear to quality inspect each unit to ensure optimal performance. Or maybe they are exactly the same as Rat Stat...
At the end of the day, I'm in agreement with derfdog that I should be good to go with my Rat Stat/Stant/Reische?? frankenstat. :)

I'm thinking you are spot on. Stant probably makes the OE stat, which is purchased by rat-stat/reische and modified. It would cost one of us ~$10 for one, they probably buy in bulk and pay even less.
I wonder if we could get Reische to weigh in? They were relatively active in a Reische vs. LME forum a while back.
I've owned the Reische 170 and now the LME 160 (paired with Quantum Blue coolant)
I really never noticed any difference with the Reische.
With my current combo its definitely noticeable, on long decel fuel cutoff coolant temps will drop into the 160's and I'd say there is definitely more temp movement with the LME and the peaks are lower.
No change in heat output or warm up time that I've been able to tell. Low 30's right now, we will see when it gets down to zero. No cel on the stock file.

Hmm, hopefully I'll see results. Everything I read was reviews mentioning results, and my normal coolant temp is around 210 so hopefully ill see a bit lower.
I've tried both the Reische 170 and the LMS 160 several times. I prefer the Reische 170 even though I use an LMS tune and have been very satisfied with LMS support. The Reische thermostat, I believe is a "cold sided" thermostat that works more consistent with the the eco boost. The LMS 160 TS is a "hot sided" TS. It is a good quality TS but seams to be more erratic than the Reische because of the difference between the hot sided and cold sided TS. With the LMS 160 I would definitely see Lower temps at times, but the problem was I would also see higher temps during cruising, idle or normal driving than the 170.

Definitely a great overall discussion and now time to get that Stat installed without having to lose much coolant....personally found it ideal and would emphasize to let the car sit overnight in order to have the least amount of coolant loss on a cold engine and would make certain to have an extra gallon of coolant just in case things don't go accordingly.best of luck to ya. Gotcha, once I get the tune for it, I'll grab some logs to make sure everything is still kosher, and see if there is room for improvement in another area.
Definitely sounds good to me......now you just need to wait for the (log warlock) himself AJP to add the finishing touch to the tune. Z :)
