I asked if it was, and his answer "Its Not"

No idea what brand it is, but it is not Reische

LOL. Typical half-answer. Thanks for the confirmation that it's not Reische, at least. :)
Its probably a Rat-stat which many sites are offering as a cheaper alternative to the Reische-170-stat. So I ordered the Reische from Lethal Performance

http://www.lethalperformance.com/reische-performance-ford-4d-170-performance-thermostat.html

10% off for black friday

Now I just have to convince myself I can burp the system properly so I can install it.
Please post pics when you get it.  The 3D stat I got for my Edge has STC or Stant stamped on it.

If tuned:  Take note of the strategy code as you return to stock (including 3 bar MAP to 2 bar MAP) -> take car in & get it serviced -> check strategy code when you get car back -> have tuner update your tune if the strategy code has changed -> reload tune -> ENJOY!

Probably, thats the price point it came out to be if you back-calculated the unleased price with the 15% off.

I know the one I got from Torrie/Unleashed came in very generic packaging with no indication of who actually made it. It was a small cardboard box with brown paper packing. I still have it in my garage because I'm keeping my oil fill cap in it now that I have a CSS.

EDIT: I just e-mailed Torrie about what brand thermostat he sells for the 170 transverse 3.5L EcoBoost, and he replied simply: "I buy them from a firm in NC." Not super confidence inspiring. **sigh** That is the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back for me. YMMV.

Time to jump on the AJP bandwagon? I'm so glad that Brad had started selling tunes once I decided to tune.

Already did, and he has been super awesome. :) Brad's service has absolutely been second to none.

Back to thermostats! ;)

Have there been any known problems with the generic, non-Reische thermostats that I should be concerned about? I've already learned an expensive lesson, so I might as well keep digging the hole if it might save me down the road... LOL

I think ZSHO was on the right track with Rat Stat thermostat coming from Unleashed.

I messaged the Rat Stat gmail account on the box in the post below, and already got a response from Robert. He stated his thermostats are built from the same parts as the Reische (sourced from Stant), and he's based out of Carthage, NC.

EDIT (again): Robert at Rat Stat confirmed that he provides thermostats to Torrie.

Guess I coulda saved a few more dollars then. Oh well, that's nice to know. I've heard no bad reviews of the unleashed 170, rat stat, or even the LME 160. Afaik everyone with an upgraded thermostat has been happy with the performance.

I'd say you are good to go with yours.

Atleast I got to support Lethal, who've been pretty awesome with me in my mustang endeavors.

And glad to hear you got the ball rolling with Brad, he amazes me with his every tune. Each time I don't think it can get any better, and I'm amazed again.

Does "sourcing the same parts" mean that Rat Stat and Reische are not making mods themselves?

Could be. Or atleast maybe the main internals? Would explain your 3D having Stant Markings.

Great question. I see on the Reische website they say:

"Our FORD-4D, FORD-G5 & FORD-50 thermostats are custom made with the same size diaphragm and bypass control as the OEM units. Each of our thermostats is modified by hand using only U.S. made parts and then quality inspected to ensure consistent opening temps. These t-stats are the only ones specifically designed to fit these applications making them the best performing low temp units on the market!"

I'm not sure how they're "modified" at either place. I also went on the Stant website (www.stant.com) and looked at their application guide. I did not see a 170 degree option for a 2013 Explorer, Taurus, Flex or Interceptor. They had 180 (OE), 188, and 190. Maybe the "modification" is to take the guts out of some other t-stat and put it in the OE cage?

I wish I had taken pictures of my Rat Stat before I installed it, but I did compare to all the Reische images when I received it, and all the stampings and numeric identifiers were identical. I just assumed that's what I was sent. It does support the possibility that they could be built from the same parts. I have no idea what the performance tolerance can be on a thermostat, but perhaps the benefit of the Reische is that they appear to quality inspect each unit to ensure optimal performance. Or maybe they are exactly the same as Rat Stat...

At the end of the day, I'm in agreement with derfdog that I should be good to go with my Rat Stat/Stant/Reische?? frankenstat. :)

I'm thinking you are spot on. Stant probably makes the OE stat, which is purchased  by rat-stat/reische and modified. It would cost one of us ~$10 for one, they probably buy in bulk and pay even less.

I wonder if we could get Reische to weigh in? They were relatively active in a Reische vs. LME forum a while back.

I've owned the Reische 170 and now the LME 160 (paired with Quantum Blue coolant)

I really never noticed any difference with the Reische.

With my current combo its definitely noticeable, on long decel fuel cutoff coolant temps will drop into the 160's and I'd say there is definitely more temp movement with the LME and the peaks are lower.

No change in heat output or warm up time that I've been able to tell. Low 30's right now, we will see when it gets down to zero. No cel on the stock file.

Did your tune account for the 170? Just curious since most say they have noticed it, and it is well reviewed on the mustang as well.

Yes, that was on the Torrie tuned 2013.
