MKT AWD PTU Serviced

I want to start by saying that everyone's posts about the PTU fluid change has been beyond helpful!  I have a 2011 Lincoln MKT AWD.  I took it in a couple weeks ago to the dealer to get the PTU and rear diff serviced.  They seemed to not have an issue with what I was asking until I picked up the car.  The service manager said the PTU is not a "serviceable part".  WTF?  He continued to say that it is a lifetime fluid and can only be replaced if a "contamination" has occurred.  I asked the obvious question about how would I know if the PTU fluid is contaminated unless you drained it.  He did not have much to say.  They changed the rear diff and sent me on my way.  I have been having the smell others have talked about when stopped - that burning almost propane like smell coming from the vents when not on recirculate.  I also notice a small sludge spot in my garage recently after a drive to the mountains.

I ended up finding a transmission shop who had some clue as to what needed to be done.  I dropped it off yesterday.  They called me a couple hours later and said the PTU is full of sludge and had metal shavings on the plug.  Thanks to everyone on here, I expected this.  They sucked out about 10oz of the sludge and refilled with redline oil.  He also noted that the relief valve had clearly puked out fluid.  He cleaned it up.  After driving a bit yesterday, the smell is gone!!!!!  My MKT seems smoother and coast so much better.  I will pay attention to the mpg and see if I notice a change.  I will take it back and repeat the service in a few thousand miles.

Welcome to EBPF, kooper, glad the issue with the PTU got caught & fixed early.  It is normal to have a few metal shavings on the plug, I believe it is magnetic.  Expected better from a Lincoln dealership, but ya never know.  Looking forward to progress reports :)

Please do post an intro thread here when you get a chance, and post some pics of your MKT and other rides:

I believe there is a TSB that says if you have that odor the dealer is to replace the PTU.  If you still have a powertrain warranty that would cover it.

Welcome aboard the E.B.P.F Kooper, great to hear you changed your fluids on such key components for a peace of mind, personally would also have the trans fluid flushed and coolant if not done so already, had mine changed roughly at 30k at the dealer which they flushed out twice with the exception of the coolant.  Z

Anytime you have your fluids changed it is quite normal to have a strong odor present for roughly 24hrs.  Z

It's really no big deal to change your ptu or rdu fluid.  Very simple job that any DIYer can do.  It actually takes longer to put the car on jack stands than the actual draining and filling of the fluids.  I've done the ptu twice on my mks so far and the last time it took me 15 minutes once the car was up in the air.  The rdu takes about 10 minutes to do and most of that is pumping the new oil in the differential.

PTU.  I think i remember reading that the procedure is slightly different with PP sho's and that you may have to drop the down pipe, but not 100% sure on that.  You'll need someone else to confirm that though.

Pmezo is correct, you will actually have to remove the passenger side DP in order to gain full access to the plug/sensor on the PP SHO.  Z
