I never stated these as facts. If GM has learned anything about CAFE regulations it will take its beating and move on. If they produce cars that get poor fuel milage they will be fined for every unit produced. On top of that the consumer will then pay a gas guzzler tax on top of the msrp. Yes they can just pass this fine onto the consumer, all that means is you are paying more for something inferior to the rest of the automotive market.
The new business model of Buick is fuel efficiency with its redesign. Yes you can produce a sports car. But it should be a modern day sports car that meets the requirements. The GT500 manages to make 650hp yet still meets fuel regulations.
You can make power and still maintain fuel economy. GM just fails at combining the two.

Not sure what you are talking about? Corvettes, particularly the Z06/ZR1 will and or are currently making big power while still getting mid to high 20's MPG wise. Nearly all of GM's performance line meets requirements. Pretty sure the Zr1 din't even get dinged on gas guzzler. Dodge and Ford on the other hand Viper, SRT Challenger/Charger, Ford GT, Cobra/GT500 have never been able to achieve mid/high 20's MPG.
