PTU Drain plug installation?

I already went over the write up over at the edge forum and it didn't really get at my questions:

To Drill/Tap the PTO ON A 2010 SHO, do you have to remove the PTU from the car or can this all be done on a lift with the PTO still installed? I suction and refill my PTO every 10,000 miles or so and have an idea to make this easier than changing the engine oil!

By drilling/tapping the drain, then installing a plug in the factory fill hole that has a stainless steel line tapped into it (similar to the bleed line on a hydraulic clutch throw out bearing), you can simply drain the gear oil, then pump fresh back in and even flush it with the same line! The only way this works is if you have the drain plug installed though..

Done with the PTU in place.  Many have done it successfully in the Edge/MKX.  Just have to take it slow that's all.

Attached is an example for the Edge.

If tuned:  Take note of the strategy code as you return to stock (including 3 bar MAP to 2 bar MAP) -> take car in & get it serviced -> check strategy code when you get car back -> have tuner update your tune if the strategy code has changed -> reload tune -> ENJOY!

There is a shop in my area that specialized in hydraulic lines, heavy machinery, tractors and stuff.. I described to him that I wanted a stainless line that would be tapped into a plug that only lets fluid in, not out. He said he can make one up for $40-50, if I get this made up and installed, maybe we can get a whole batch of them made!

I have updated my last post with one users experience on his Edge

Perfect! I may visit the trans shop that is rebuilding the trans this week and see if they can tap this hole for me.. would be a lot easier for me that way.

Does anyone know the thread size for the fill port? Ill get to working on the fill line at the same time.

With the extra fill tube amount how would you not overfill? The pdf in the previous post shows how the amount of fluid added does not appear to be an exact science like changing oil.

The volume of fluid that goes into the PTU is known... So this won't be an issue. Its not like I planned on filling it till it came out of the vent port.

WE Drilled and Tapped the PTU Yesterday, WHAT FUN

AND for anyone that DOES NOT want to Do that And Drill it
AN EASY WAY to DRAIN and FILL utilizing the Bulb type Pump,
ALSO if you have aftermarket Down Pipes, that make it difficult to
run the Hose down into the bottom of PTU, I offer this easy solution...
1/4 Copper X 6" approx (i used Stainless Steel ) tubing with a 120 Deg Bend @ one end
(120 Deg Approx., may have to adjust the radius and also cut the end down)
Add a small piece of the tubing (about 3") to the bent end and Behold:

An easy way to get the tubing to the Bottom of the PTU, with one hand even..
AND to fill, Remove the 3" hose and reverse your New Gear Oil right in.

Was drillling and tapping the drain plug fairly easy? Did you do it on car? Did you have lift access?

The Car is on a Lift for a ton of Mods....
The Case is Fairly Thick So, It was a 2 Man Job
and i would not have attempted it without a lift,
There was Some Swearing involved, and the PTU oil
ruined the other guys hoodie. while i remained Dry.
So we Did the 1/4" Plug Modification. Yea two men
so that the drill remained Strait. need to Source a
hex head Brass Plug to Finish this up.... ;D

I don't like the idea of regularly removing and reinstalling the drain plug into the PTU during fluid changes, so I'm going to be installing a drain valve like this: https://www.amazon.com/Fumoto-F-108N-Engine-Drain-Valve/dp/B003VCB9WC#Ask

This way the threads never have an opportunity to strip during installation.

Then I'll have to find an adaptor (or series of adaptors) to be able to perminantly install the braided stainless steel fill tube, routing it along the firewall and attaching it to a place TBD in the engine bay for easy access. Car is still at the transmission shop getting a rebuild, will get this done next weekend I hope!

Keep in mind the OE drain plug is magnetic, and mine was totally caked with metal shavings @ 30k mi. If you replace with a non-magnetic valve, you may want to add an auxiliary magnet to capture metal and keep it from floating back up into bearings, seals, and gears.

I like the idea, though. Would make servicing much less of a PITA.

I actually have been researching how difficult it would be to tap the vent tube hole for a fill tube adaptor, that way the fill port is left intact and the magnet is still in place.

Can the vent tube be accessed in a SHO with the PTU still installed in the car? Maybe just a press in fitting with a "permanently" installed tube extending into he engine bay and a vent cap on the end of that, witch can be removed to double as a fill tube would work?

If you install the PTU vent extension kit, that should accomplish the "fill" requirements.
