Personally, I would go with Dell.  I have a Lenovo work laptop and it sucks.  But it all depends on what the deal is and what the laptop comes with and how you use the laptop.  PM me and I will take a look at what you are looking at getting and I will provide you pros and cons. I am an IT/Computer engineer.

Brand alone isn't much to go on.  Dell makes great products and crappy ones.  So does Lenovo.  The CPUs are all made by Intel and AMD anyway, lol.  So you'd really need to link individual systems with pricing, in order to make a comparison.  I'm not an IT/Engineering guy, but I have built mid-high end desktop gaming rigs, and other enthusiast PC type stuff.

I do IT for a living and my company sells both Dell and Lenovo (we favor Lenovo due to it being a longer relationship). My work laptop is a Lenovo and its a BEAST. They give us engineers the top of the line / maxed out Models as we are the face of the products at our customers. I've had no issues with this laptop, and even use it to create my videos for the blog I do.

On the other side, my Brother-in-law works for Dell. lol (funny how that works). He always has new toys and they are making a big play for more business in the Milwaukee market. They have WAY nicer corporate imaging tools (which I use at customers as well), and they have some pretty innovative designs for their tablets.

My vote is pick what you need, in your price range. You can't go wrong with either system. Stay away from the cheaper brands like Acer, Gateway, and Toshiba. I've done enough corporate imaging in the past at customers to know their fail rate is much higher than Dell, Lenovo and HP. I've imaged close to 60,000 systems in my career....

Laptop doesnt matter per say but the screen resolution does. Get a 1080p screen. One that does 1920x1080. Also get the least expensive laptop with 8gb of ram and a SSD. All those things will add up to a pleasing laptop experience compared to one that does not have those three things.

That's basically the computer i'm on right now.  Just slightly newer and a little better.  For regular web browsing and typical computer stuff, it's more than enough.  That's exactly what i paid for mine about 2 years ago and it's still as good and fast as the day i got it.

r1crusher

I've used both in my business dealings.  Laptops I prefer Lenovo personally.  I've had Dell but I've always been drawn to the features that Lenovo provided over Dell.  As an self employed IT guy, I usually recommend Lenovo but if price point matters it would push towards Dell.  I personally own a fairly well setup Lenovo like 14SHOCAR.  My wife has a Flex and loves it, hell I even got her coworker a X1 Carbon....that is a very nice portable IMO.

But you can't go wrong with either one really.  You'll pay for the nicer things like good/larger display, SSD, etc. If you want battery life, look for an SSD and a "xxxxU" CPU.

As for that one for 399, I'd pass due to the screen resolution alone.  Trust us when we say no less than 1920x1080.

Definitely try and get a screen with at least 1080p. And don't worry too much about ram. It is easy and cheap to add more to a laptop. It isn't hard either to swap out a hard drive or ssd drive.

Honestly Z -- go with what's in your budget.

Here's your car analogy for the win:

An Intel I3 is the lowest "4 cylinder" Processor.
An Intel I5 is the midrange "6 cylinder" processor.
An Intel I7 is the big gas guzzling "8 cylinder" processor.
Each of these can be turbo'd with what they call "Pro".

The screen resolution should be 1920x1080. Not that you'd see the difference, but ODD screen resolutions distort the screen. Any higher of a resolution, you may no be able to see all of the buttons. A lower resolution will make the buttons look larger and more grainy.

A solid state drive vs a spindle drive is the difference between E85 and 93 octane. E85 (solid state) will be much faster than a 93 octane spindle drive. A car with 93 octane (spindle) will be able to store more gas (aka more disk space). Since the e85 is faster, it consumes a larger footprint, and you can only fit so large of a gas tank on the car. That's why SSD's are typically smaller in disk size. Corn Fed (solid state drives) is the way to go as the performance vastly out weighs the storage.

---- Ok on the real note here ------

Get a laptop with a good screen resolution and within your budget. I'd favor an i5 over an i3. I7 will come with a premium price. You can always buy a blazing fast SSD if you can get a killer deal on a computer without one.

I hope this helps. (if not gives you a bit of a chuckle) lol

The screen is a bit low rez, and the processor is pretty slow.  If you get easily enraged when the computer takes forever to do something, I'd spring for a faster laptop, lol. It has a good sized hard drive, and enough ram for normal use.  So yeah, depending on what you use it for it may be just fine.  If you're not into computers and just check email, view photos, etc then it's probably fine.  If you want to use it for work of any kind then it's probably not up to snuff.  If you need something more powerful then it may be tough to find anything at that price point.  Best I could find for something cheap but useable was about $100 more expensive than the one you linked.  It does have a better screen and WAY faster processor.  Same hard drive space and RAM.  And Asus is a solid brand.

I appreciate all the replies fellas!  I'm certainly not new to the Computer Era and just wanted some feedback on what the best bang for your buck is @ $400.00 price range!
I guess anything new will be a vast improvement compared to my old school computer which got me more upset than anything which solely served it's purpose. Lol.  Z

Focus on 1080p first.

SSD included second.

You can deal with 4gb of ram and upgrade later.

Processor isnt a big deal as you are not a power user. Since you will be in a 1080p screen that will get you a better level of processor for the most part.

As you found out brand isnt a huge thing. Ford vs Chevy etc etc.
