2011 SHO P0020 !!

Hey everyone,

I am new to the forum so please excuse my newbie thing lol.

I own a 2011 SHO with Performance Package on it

the car has 109K miles on it.

So i noticed a little while back the check engine light came on, and when I checked to see what the issue could be I got the P0020 code on my obd, which basically stands for intake camshaft position actuator circuit/open  Bank 2.

I know where it is located, but I've read some articles about the sensor may have to be changed, some said cleaned.

I took it to a nearby mechanic, he checked it, same code appeared (P0020), but he said that in order to get it replaced, he has to remove my intake manifold??? and after replacing the sensor he needs to reprogram the car to read the new sensor?

please advise me as I do not feel like waving bye bye to my SHO forever.

Is your SHO stock, or tuned?  Have you tried clearing the code and pulling the battery neg cable for 30 minutes (at least) to let the PCM relearn?

Could be a wiring issue (loose pin in the loom, pigtail on later MY SHOs, ...), as in this case

The camshaft position sensor (located on the other/air intake side of the engine) is pretty easy:


The VCT solenoid (whose screen can get clogged) is more work, as the valve cover (and hence the intake manifold) has to come off:


Last resort:  If you actually have to replace the actuator, yes, it is a somewhat involved process, because you have to take off the valve cover, the front cover, etc to get to the actuators.  Good time to do the water pump though

My car is stock not tuned, but in that case, I will try unplugging the battery for 30 minutes, and I'll also remove my intake in order for me to reach the wires and sensors, I'll try either checking them or cleaning them.

But its kinda strange because the Check Engine Lights keep turning on and off, like it would come on for a day or 2, the go off for another day or 2 and so on.

Checking the VCT solenoid connector does not require removing anything, as it is readily available on top of the valve cover (left hand side).  So that's where I'd start.

Out of curiousity, what oil/filter have you been using, how many kms/miles before an oil change?

Well being in Saudi Arabia and living in a hot weather (50 degree Celsius) in the summer, I use 5W-30 motorcraft oil, and also MotorCraft Oil filter, I however change the oil every 5K KM.
