I just cannot see myself dropping a $1,000 or more for a complete cat back system so I was hoping I could save some dollars and just free up some flow by going with a Dynomax axle back system and deleting the 3rd cat. Does anyone have a sound clip of this set-up?

In the definitive exhaust thread, my car is also posted... later in the thread.
Unlike that guy, I showed what it really sounds like under load... RASPY

Thats what a bare x sounds like... great idle and great wot, still quiet when cruising.
But you'll have to learn to deal with midrange rasp.

The muffled x is mot much quieter, and has no rasp at all.

Buy that and use it to delete the cat and resonator, it is a straight through resonated x-pipe. You'll have less rasp and basically the same performance due to the straight-through design.

As far as axle back, you could instead purchase 2 high quality mufflers such as Magnaflow to match the resonated x-pipe or Borla, then have a shop swap those in or create a axle back out of them for you. At the same time you can throw on any exhaust tips to make it your own.

$300 in mufflers + $2-400 for labor depending on your area = $5-700 exhaust with no rasp and free flowing. You would be surprised how restrictive our original mufflers are, as free flowing mufflers are more prone to rasp the resonated x-pipe created with the Magnaflow should help in this department.

Looks like I am going to run the Dynomax axle back with the Magnaflow 11385.
Is the Dynomax muffler a straight through design?

That muffler is NOT an x pipe...
only the 14" versions are x's

The 11" versions are just two perforated tubes...

the correct part #s are 11385 for 2.25"
and 11386 for 2.5"

They are not x-pipes though on a turbocharged vehicle scavenging is not an issue, the importance is spent on getting the exhaust gas out of the exhaust as soon as possible.

^^ They are indeed. I spent time researching what the smallest length, free flowing x-pipe designed muffler would be and the Magnaflow 11378 is it in 2.25" OEM size piping at 11" length. I might have caused some confusion as the 11378 is not a true x-pipe but similar.

I agree... I was just being clear, the 11" is just a perforated core, a true midmuffler. The 14" are perforated x pipes
