Driving down the road... vent is "dripping" extra PTU fluid due to overfill .... This gets into the airstream under the car... gets atomized and swirls up in the vacuum behind the trunk lid and deposited on the paint.  Don't know if it's much... but had a similar sequence of event happen on another car with a leaking HP oil pump.   Just a thought and if it occurs it can't be good for the paint.

Wait, so if I didn't do PTU maintenance and ran mine until it went out, they'd charge me 5K for a new one?

if they did they'd be ripping you off. I believe a new non-pp PTU list for $750 and I believe the job of replacing 4hrs. So unless your dealer charging 1k per hr.

Ok so I have some more info for the 13+ guys with PP to do the fluid change. It seems from the shop manual, you need to drop the cat in order to access the fill hole. I am trying to get the exact procedure. According to the shop manual water cooled PTU's require the cat to be removed to access the fill point. I'm not sure how hard that is, I didn't really look at it. But since I am looking at the DPs I will probably do it at that time.

Well that's slightly annoying. Thanks for the info, though.

And FWIW, when the PTO (similar to PTU) on my Speed6 failed a year and a half or so ago, I got a pretty amusing quote for replacement from my Mazda dealer...

$5,000

I lol'd, had it towed back to the house, put it on jack stands and swapped a salvaged unit in for $900 total. Goofy bastards.

If tuned:  Take note of the strategy code as you return to stock (including 3 bar MAP to 2 bar MAP) -> take car in & get it serviced -> check strategy code when you get car back -> have tuner update your tune if the strategy code has changed -> reload tune -> ENJOY!

Dealers are morons it seems. Mine didn't want to remove tires off of my wheels on my 5.0 to install tpms because the sidewall was too thin (despite their claimed "state of the art" equipment); however, they're the same size as a gt500 factory tire. 96mm btw.

Speaking of dealerships, i actually called a local here i used to take my 5.0 to and the tech said that he didn't recommend swapping the PTU fluid... Imagine that, a dealer not wanting my money.

Sorry, 96.25mm I had a typo. Was throwing out the aspect ratio. A stock gt500 tire sidewall is supposedly 99.75mm in the rear based on what I was searching. not much of a difference.

Or the better one is I wanted to get 373's added to the 5.0. I purchased the Ford Racing Kit and wanted a quote from the dealer.  They tell me it would void the warranty on the drivetrain. I said "How the hell is it that by adding gears that you offer in other 5.0's from Ford, installed by Ford, into a Ford vehicle, it voids the warranty?" On top of that, their quote was for 1000 bucks, where I'm getting it done by a reputable shop for 200.  So there is absolutely no reason to use the dealership apparently.

Was told the same by my dealer and got the good old lifetime fluid speech so I will just do it myself when it warms up in the Spring.

Mine told me that because Ford says 100k miles that they wouldn't do it because if it failed after that Ford would not warranty and they would have to pay for replacing it.
