Custom Exhaust Setup Idea

As I approach the purchase of my Ecoboost platform, MKS or SHO, I am trying to determine my best exhaust option for street/strip. Here is what I plan on putting together for a custom exhaust:
-Uncatted down pipes
-First 2'-0 of exhaust to be 2 1/2" with (2) 2 1/2" electric exhaust cutouts
-Transition to OEM 2 1/4"
-Remove 3rd cat and resonator and weld in 2 1/4" straight
-Keep the stock mufflers
-The idea would be to tune for when the exhaust cutouts are open for the strip
I feel like this combination would offer a mild sound increase on the street, which will keep the wife very happy, and also giving the best flow possible through the exhaust cutouts while at the strip. This setup would ultimately undercut any of the pricing available for exhaust systems and offer better flow.
So here are a couple questions:
-Is there enough room to mount up the (2) 2 1/2" electric exhaust cutouts

-Does this system make any sense for the best flow at the strip?

I don't think you're gonna find your answer here, as it relates to whether or not the cutouts you've spec'd, will fit.

If memory serves me correctly, I believe only 4DRHTRD has done cutouts.

So, your pool of members who've tried this, is going to be extremely limited, if available at all.

I know my custom down pipes are 3" in diameter, but then reduce down 2.5" to connect to the remainder of my custom set up.

Here's my suggestion to you, as reading over several of your posts, across many threads (both threads you've created, along with threads others have created) ......

I get the impression that you want (or desire) to have everything laid out for you. So you're sitting golden whenever you actually purchase your EB based vehicle.

Understand, that although asking a crap load of questions is dynamic, most of us here, if not the vast majority of us, haven't had this info available to us when we began modding these platforms.

We've essentially "wung it".

You may have to find yourself at that same crossroad of your own, where you just say "F it" and get under your EB car (when you buy it) and try it out for yourself.

The great thing about doing it that way, is that you'll know 1st hand what fits, and what doesn't. You'll also reap the benefits of saying to yourself "hot damn, I did that all on my own".

In closing, if you don't get the answers your looking for, that's ok. But feel confident in getting what you want done, how you want it done, by pioneering something new of your own, on your own.

Then report back your experiences to the membership.

Remember, take lots of pics and measurements along the way!

It won't fit... :)
But you don't just have the flow of the single 3" you still have the exhaust in play, you're just adding additional flow. I'll get dynos with it open and closed with the new turbos very soon hopefully.

The oval low profile cutout I want to use is only 3.35" in height. Hopefully that brings some light to the cutouts and the possibility of fitment.

I'd take the information along with your car to a good exhaust shop and start fabbing! :)
No interest in the custom cutout scenario that would be worthwhile enough on my side to have it made, sorry :(

Those are pretty cool.  I just have a question.  I thought I heard somewhere that engines with turbos require some kind of back pressure.  Is that right?

There is a method to my madness when it comes to my series of inquiries about these platforms. One of the best things that ever happened to car enthusiasts was the proliferation of the dedicated, car specific forums. It truely has opened the door for sharing information of what modifications work and what modifications will have you wasting your money and time. In this format of communication as long as you have done your due diligence to seek out the information yourself first and did not find your answer, I feel like any question is warranted if it is thoughtfully posed and respectful of other members.
I have come up with plenty of solutions for past vehicles with custom, handcrafted components dedicated to a single application. But at the end of the day if someone has already created a better mousetrap or knows more than me, which is very likely, please do shed some light and it will truely be appreciated. Pay it forward, tell your secrets and when it it is all said and done it will do nothing more than to advance these cars more quickly through the pool of our collective brains and love of cars.

I have had electric cutouts on my last two vehicles that were N/A and they definitely like a little back pressure for best performance down low. But I am off the mindset that a turbo likes to see minimal to no backpressure and you want pipe sizing that allows for the highest velocity with the least amount of backpressure. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

Exactly my point.

To reiterate to SRT8, no one else has done cutouts, other than you 4DR.

So no one will be able to answer his question. Or, should I say, you're the only one at this point to best be able to answer his question.

He should take what he wants to a shop, and git 'er done.

Well there's the rub there's TONS of turbo car forums out there, I read constantly on the EVO, Subi, Mazdaspeed and other turbo related sites but here's the main scenario:
Remove any and all backpressure if possible, a 6" pipe on the turbo is the best case scenario if possible.
Now fit that to fit in with your noise requirements, physical fitment etc. My first iteration of the cutout was slap a cutout on the stock downpipes in an H pipe with a plate I took off at the track. I built the setup in preparation for the boost activated cutouts (e-cutouts SUCK! IMHO). Once I got downpipes I waited awhile until I could reinstall and myself and the fabricator came up with an idea, luckily he could accommodate it. There's not too much room around that part of the car, looks like there is but when you start working, NOPE!
Slap that baby up on the rack and start scheming!!! You're going to have to go it your own on this one, just know that you're doing it right, I agree with your idea just don't know if you can make it fit. Sledge hammer on the floor boards always works though!!!!

Lol must have read my mind, thats exactly the setup Im running(night hawk mod) hopefully tomorrow night at the strip, went with two dumps, one for each bank of the motor ill let you know how much it helped.

Great to hear someone is pressing through with this set up. Are you changing your tune or just running the normal tune with them open?

Night Hawk

 Yep running the same tune, I used the SPT vacuum activated dumps so they are only open under boost. Ive been running them for about a month without any issue.
