I was at local track last night near St. Petersburg Fl. and this dude in a Mustang starts asking me what was done to Flex, Tell him Intake and a tune. he replies with "I'm a mechanic at a Lincoln dealer and this guy came in with an MKS with both turbos blown. Ford wouldn't cover it cause he had a tune still loaded in it, so If something happens to mine make sure to put it back to stock(no s***)". He claimed that the stock turbos cant handle upping the boost at all let alone the 20k miles this guy ran it. I call BS or one shitty ass tune, Anyone else heard of this?? I know on my Torque app I'm hitting 16 all the time. Won't the wastegate dump after that?

This forum is proof that he is an idiot.

There are some great techs at Ford/Lincoln but they also have their fair share that don't know shiat beyond what the manual tells them. Ask them to do something outside of normal service/ maintenance and look for the deer in the headlights face. That being said if some dipshit was trying to run 20 lbs of boost on a tune the turbos probably were cooked and he deserved to have his warranty voided.

Anything is possible... I suppose.... BUT

Sounds like an "urban legend"!  FMCS is rather direct, but spot on..... we do know better here.  I call BS!

I agree - the data on this forum and others seems to spell out a different story.

In this day and age, Ford, or any other auto manufacturer for that matter, isn't going to release a vehicle in which all of its components are pushed to the edge right out of the box. I absolutely believe that more performance can be achieved on stock parts. How much more is the real question. My preferred safety margin may be different than yours and is obviously different from Ford's or I wouldn't be modding my MKS. As FoMoCoSho mentioned, if the guy was pushing 20psi, then he deserved what he got. I'm willing to bet, based on what I've seen here and elsewhere, that stock turbos for the SHO/MKS/Flex/MKT are capable of generating at least 15psi reliably. In recent data logs, my boost spiked to 18psi on one occasion and 17psi on two occasions. I would prefer to be at 15-16 and I am working with Torrie to ensure that my tune is providing safe power.

then why did you go with 3bar mapping?

I'm not following the question...Help me understand... TIA

2-bar map maxes out at ~14.7, and Joleat wants to be at 15-16, so a 3-bar map is necessary.

If tuned:  Take note of the strategy code as you return to stock (including 3 bar MAP to 2 bar MAP) -> take car in & get it serviced -> check strategy code when you get car back -> have tuner update your tune if the strategy code has changed -> reload tune -> ENJOY!

FoMoCoSHO

1 bar handles atmospheric pressure, 2 bar handles atmospheric plus about 14.7 psi of boost. Reading anything over that requires the 3rd bar.

Joleat

DRII,

Just as the others have said, the 3-bar MAP will allow me to safely run more than 14.7psi on a consistent basis. With a tune and a 2-bar MAP, your car may occasionally still see above 14.7psi, but it cannot adequately compensate for a value that high. Even if I were not running an increased boost tune, I would still prefer to run a 3-bar MAP tune just so that my car can adequately adjust for those occasional boost spikes.

EcoPowerParts

There are so many rumors out there about these vehicles, what they can support and what they can do.
I love it when I would go to the track with my Flex and some guy tells me how he heard of a 10 second black Flex. Umm that's me and I haven't ran anywhere near a 10 and neither has anyone else....
Hilarity!
