Is it really AWD?

Anyone actually tested this? I'm just curious if my car really is AWD or no. I should put it on lift and have some push the pedal.

Yup, many times on the dyno, at about 2-5mph the rears kick in when it senses the fronts are moving but backs aren't. The car is basically FWD until it senses it's losing traction up front, it then sends power to the rear. The problem is at 150lb ft of torque to rear wheels it thinks that it's hurting the AWD system and closes the throttle body and opens the blow off valves to remove power immediately.

Wait; you're telling me my car is FWD?

So if I'm launching, I'm launching at FWD?

Well that completely sucks.

YUP, it's a FWD/AWD car. :)

OK; I'm little confused.

So, aiming for 400 hp at wheels; my car is not going to engage AWD because it's going to think it will break.

My car is really just FWD.

darreli

Yeah...FWD biased system. I think there are at least a few different discussions on here about that already

geswek

Where? It isn't in this forum.

No...not really. It's not a 50/50 AWD however. 4dr explained it pretty well. It engages the AWD when the front tires slip however it cuts power at the same time. Still launches ALOT better than a FWD car

geswek

It sounds to me like it could launch even better if the car wasn't cutting or killing.

For sure! That's my biggest problem. There's definately a thread that discusses just that, maybe it didnt make it over to this forum but I find it hard to believe. I'll search and post a link.

We've talked to JTEKT who makes the PTU and it is electronically controlled however they stated that Ford wanted control of that. From what my tuner, or any other as far as I know, has said it's not a parameter on the PCM so there is no way to change it thru programming.

On another note, my dealer believes there is a way to control it and they are checking out all options for that for me

Keep me posted.

I mean, I'm investing this money to make a 400awhp vehicle and I'm little bummed (not deal breaker) but I was hoping I'd have a AWD launch capable vehicle. I figured with AWD, I would never have traction issues.

darreli

Read 3 threads down...there's discussion there

I read that thread -- good read.

I was a little quick on draw; I don't expect to be traction free. I guess I expected some power to my rear.

After reading that thread--it seems like "some" power will go to rear to the point it will cut out as my launching?

This is what happens when you have too much boost in first gear. :)
