Strange ticking noise

From what I understand, normal oil starts off as regular oil and then viscosity enhancers are added to reach the desired viscosity. These viscosity enhancers gradually diminish from the first time that the engine is started until you drain the oil. That means that the engine is subjected to additional wear due to the oil viscosity changing and not providing the same lubrication as when it was new. Synthetic oil is engineered on the molecular level to be a specific viscosity, so it doesn't have these viscosity enhancers that break down. That being said, with synthetic oil it retains it's viscosity throughout the life of the oil change and the only reason you need to change it, is to remove the carbon and other deposits and accumulate in the oil.

I guess I got a little off topic there, but I was attempting to answer the question on the previous post.

In my 2013 SHO I have heard that ticking noise a few times during crank up after the car has sat for an extended period of time. I have ran full synthetic Motorcraft or Mobile 1 oil with Motorcraft oil filters from the first oil change. The car has 36,600 miles right now, and it seems that I have heard the noise more when the oil was toward the end of it's life span.

To me this noise sounds very similar to the noise that is made on a high mileage engine during a cold crank when someone has went about 8-10k on a single oil change.

Would be nice to crack open the valve covers and see what's going on.

If tuned:  Take note of the strategy code as you return to stock (including 3 bar MAP to 2 bar MAP) -> take car in & get it serviced -> check strategy code when you get car back -> have tuner update your tune if the strategy code has changed -> reload tune -> ENJOY!

Mine is probably more noticeable when it the car is cold (or as cold as it can be in Arizona), but the thing that really gets me is the very random times when I hear it above 5k rpms.  That's when I really don't like it! :'(

Sadly it is the wife's car, so I can't go too crazy on it...just a simple tune for now.

When you are hearing that noise at 5,000 rpm, does the vehicle fall on it's face for a second?

Since my SHO is not tuned I regularly run 87 octane in through it. One time I got some bad gas and when I had it WOT the engine detonated at around 4,500 or 5,000 rpm and then fell on its face for a split second and then a let off. I did this a couple more times on that tank of gas with the same results. After I filled up again, it has never done that again. If you are not familiar with the sound of detonation, it sounds like a marble rapidly bouncing around inside your intake. The only problem with 87 is that it is not always 87.

My Flex does it to on cold starts. I had my wife start it with my face in the engine bay. I swear its coming from yhe throttle body. I did notice if I turn the key all the way to on and push go pedal to floor twice it is alot quieter.

I would be very carefully unsung 87 in a sho, tuned or not... There is a advisory on every gas station pump claiming the "range" an octane rating can be within... Around here it's usually +/- 3, now if running 87 through your sho sounds ok, how does running 84 sound? Besides, you can't always hear detonation happening, and no matter how Breif it happens or how little load was applied to the engine while it was happening, it does damage! So just daily driving around, spirited freeway runs or showing a new SS camaro who's boss, if your running 87 in your tank it's a roll of the dice. All of this is of course my opinion, so it may be and likely is incorrect on one level or another.

Perhaps you could provide a audio clip of exactly what your hearing. As these motors are on the noisy side with lots of clinking and tapping. The high pressure fuel pump and injectors are quite noisy.

So this morning I went out and started the car and the ticking noise was nonexistent.  So cold weather sure is out...

bring this topic back to life. I to have a ticking noise sounds like its coming from the right side of the engine bay. Can hear it better while listening near the wheel well.

Its probably the high pressure fuel pump under the hood.
Under you engine cover there is a price of ridge foam covering it.

The char coal canister is not under the hood it is back by the gas tank. These DI motor are very noisy so until someone can post a clip of the sounds that are being heard its hard to say whats normal and abnormal.

I saw the video, might be belt tensioner/pulley ,belt noise.
How many miles?check for metal dust or powder around tensioner/ pulley bolt
