Adaptive learning after battery reset

Hey All,

So after getting my car back from the shop (replaced the master cylinder) on the drive home I noticed the trans shifting much firmer than before, and also downshifting quickly and firmly during braking, it was pretty herky-jerky. I thought about the possibility of it being an issue stemming from the adaptive learning cycle. When my mechanic took the car out to test the brakes, he obviously had to drive it aggressively and test the brakes aggressively. The car was driving like crap basically after that. Well, the SHO learned that behavior and I had to pull the negative battery cable off for a while to reset the KAM. This morning, I performed the procedure in our manual (page 340 for my 2010) which states:

After a battery disconnect, the car must relearn idle and trim settings.

Start the car and let it come up to operating temp.
Turn on the A/C and let it idle for 1 min.
With the A/C on disengage the parking brake, place your foot on the brake and shift to drive, let it idle for 1 min.
Then drive the car over 10 miles.

Doing the procedure the car has never driven better. The trans softened the shifts (this procedure reset the trans adaptive learning as well) While braking, the shifts are perfect and not jerky or firm.

Just thought I would pass this on, I'm sure many of you know about this, but I was amazed at how much it made a difference. I know it will continue to learn, but with me as the only driver it should remain how I like it.

Great that the brakes are fixed!
Good info on the reset.  Glad you're pleased!... It is a pretty smart car.

Thanks man! It is really the best car I have owned. Brakes work like a champ now and she is back to driving my way :) Good thing my wife never wants to drive the SHO, we would have another bad habit battle :)

Dont tell her I said that.

LOL.... My wife doesn't understand yet why I don't want her to drive mine.... but we get it!

you could do what i've done, scared the **** out of her on the few times she's ridden in it, unless your better half likes it then you got yourself a real problem. also what works well is put 2 big subs in the trunk on the shelf there then nobody wants to ride in the back seat & then the SHO is all yours. worked like a champ for me!!!!

Thanks for posting this.  I haven't had the battery disconnected since I've got the car and I'm sure my driving technique has changed especially since the tune.  I will probably try this once the weather warms up and I have nothing to do for a few hours to see if it improves the "feel" of the drive.

Yeah, just lucky I guess.  No wife to answer to or share my SHO with.

BTW, I didn't think to disconnect the battery last night when I changed the intake.  But, when I do, I pull everything off the battery.  Then, the ECU shuts down.

I'm going to try this as well.  I notice the Explorer shifts much firmer than the Taurus.  So many of you guys talk about barking tires on the 1-2.  Hell I can't even get them to squeak from a dead punch.

Haha, I had my temp control up to 75, I am thinking running the defroster should work too.

The AC, if it works, should still be making air 40-50 degrees I think. so it might act as a bad heater, LOL
