On my drive home from work today my MKS started to misfire and the check engine light started flashing.  I was only a mile from home so I drove it real easy home, and when I got there I noticed I could smell gas.

I fired up my torque app and got the codes below.  First one seems to be fuel pressure related, next three are misfire related.

I have a Premium Care warranty so I swapped in my 2 bar MAP and flashed to stock.  I have no other mods other than new spark plugs about 3,000 miles ago.  Car has been tuned since last summer.

When I fired the car back up after returning to stock the issue seems to have corrected itself.  Any thoughts?

Your smelling gas because your car isn't getting spark, but the injectors are still spraying.  If it were just one cylinder, I'd say it's possibly a bad or leaky injector, but two going at the same exact time is pretty rare.

If it's under warranty, have it towed in and let them handle and pay for it.  Do not drive it while it's misfiring. 

If it were me, I'd start pulling spark plugs for cylinder 1 and 3 and check to see how they look.  Make sure they're correctly torqued down if they look good.  Did you have any recent work done?

Just noticed the first code.  That's fuel pressure related.  There's a recall for the module for the 13+ MKS's, but they go bad on prior years too.  It's basically the computer that controls how and how much fuel the fuel pump sends to the injectors.

What year is your MKS?

Mine is a 2012.  The issue is...It's not misfiring anymore and there are no codes since I flashed it back to stock.

I couldn't take it to a dealer like this since they'd likely just say nothing is wrong.

A failing fuel pump module would be intermittent.  If this randomly happens again in a day or a couple days, that would be my #1 suspect.

In the meantime, I'd still pull the plugs from cylinder 1 and 3.  Make sure they're clean, gapped correctly, and everything is ok with them.  Just to rule out.

Fuel injector is a possibility, as is a valve cover gasket leak.  But yeah recheck plugs first.  The random misfire code bothers me, possible electrical issue.  Check the health of the battery, see if has Voltage & CCAs as expected.  Look for loose/pinched wiring, possibly a loose/bad ground.

I'll check plugs and electrical connections.  Battery should be good...I installed a new Motorcraft battery a year ago.

I wouldn't completely rule out the battery based on that. The OEM Motorcraft batteries are notorious for early failure. might be worth a check still

I'll give that a check.  I'll be pissed if that thing goes bad in a year!

So just as a follow up, I checked battery, plugs and looked for any loose electrical connections and everything​ looks good.

Hasn't happened since either.
