Another nut hugger thread it seems LOL
Ha ha i wouldn't quite go there yet. . . but let me help you along. LOL
Personally, i have only worked with 2 tuners. One of which is a 3 letter acronym we can't mention here. Based on the rules of this thread i would have nothing to say anyhow as i don't really have anything positive to say about that particular tuner. I only ran the tune for a month before contacting Brad . . AJPturbo.
Brad right off the bat was extremely personable and answered a lot of my questions about his background and general qualifications as a tuner. Come to find out i was foolish to questions his skills.
He reviewed my existing tunes logs and gave me honest and factual feedback without ever asking who's tune it was and avoided making any derogatory or negative remarks despite the fact he would have been justified in doing so. This was all before i payed him a dime or committed to doing so.
It didn't take me long to decide i wanted to work with him. The first tune he sent me was a conservative mild boost tune just to see how my car reacted. It didn't react quite the way we wanted- commanded boost was sporadic and didn't stay consistent throughout a WOT pull. We deliberated back and forth to troubleshoot if this was a corrupt strategy or an issue caused by my elevated altitude(i'm @ 5500ft+). After a visit to the dealer it seemed i had the most up to date strategy. Ultimately we settled on the fact that it was caused by the altitude. Brad sorted out the issue within a few revisions. This alone likely would have left me SOL with any vendor tune. I don't feel many if any vendors at all would have been willing to dig into the issue and gain the experience of tuning at my specific altitude and persevere through the problems in can create. Not only that but he figured out a way to have the car automatically switch to a torque based algorithm as i climb further in altitude instead of commanding a flat boost value and over-working the turbos as the air gets thinner. I'm pretty dang sure i have the only tuned SHO that will behave this way!
After we got that speedbump out of the way all the tunes, revisions and progress moved along pretty quickly. Every new revision he sent he gave me a detailed explanation of what changes were made along with his interpretation of the logs i had sent.
To fast forward a bit . . I'm now on rev18 of my 91oct and rev5 of E20 tune. along the way i had Brad revise part throttle settings, torque converter setting so i could launch harder, and various other minor things that i was just generally picky about. I also would propose some off the wall ideas for the tune and he would discuss pro's and cons with me. I now feel i have a 100% custom tune tailored to my driving style. I also believe i will be setting some records this track season for a no bolt on SHO at my altitude.
. . OK now you can call it a nut hugger thread LOL!
