Title: Remote start BS
Post by: BlueSHO on January 21, 2014, 10:05:53 PM
On my 12 SHO I have the one button dealer installed remote start. That was how you did when you ordered a car and wanted that. My problem is that how do you make the car run longer than 5 minutes and how the hell do you stop the engine from killing when opening the door? This system has the separate remote that attaches to the factory key fob. This design is horse$hit. My 13 XSport has everything on one fob and does not kill the engine when opening the doors. Any help would be appreciated.

Disable mykeys and make them admin keys. Is a fix I have heard.

That will fix keys stopping with you open it the 5 minute thing is probably a fuel thing. I find that pretty stupid cause when its 30 below you gotta let it run for 15 atleast

Not that it helps you at all, but the factory remote start on my '13 SHO will run for a max of 20 minutes

Yes my 13 Xsport is like that.

So I take both my key fobs in the car because one is an administrative key and then go to setup to disable the Mykeys?

I just checked and it's 10 minutes not 5 but still not long enough. I think I could change it to 15 but I'm not sure how.

Here are links to the oficial Ford owners manuals as searchable pdf files so you can read for details by model. There is a way to double the time on the '13 by just hitting a button on the key fob (third image below), and for cold weather the heating can be programmed to turn on too rather than default to your last setting if desired (deice/defog, etc.):

Below are 3 pages that explain extending run time to at least 20 minutes. click them to enarge... See the red arrow on the last one The menu will come up in "settings" to the left of the speedo in a '13.
Unfortunately the dealer added option apparently doesn't work like the factory installed option... users of these systems will need to help out.

Not trying to go OT here, but for anyone with a pre 2013, there is a thread here with info on a relatively low cost 2-way Viper system that functions a lot better than the dealer installed on issues like the car shutting off, range, etc.   I did not want the dealer installed system myself.  For a long time there was no viable alternative to the dealer installed system and I just wanted to make sure folks knew that. :)

Here is a link to that thread:

TSS has it right I have a '10 that i put the 2way viper on for about 4 months & love it. no issues at all. Of course on my '13 escape have the ford one & besides it not being a 2 way works well, no shutoff issues or door issues but have not run it more than 10 min.

TSS and I have the same setup installed by the same guy and it works awesome.  2500 ft range on it too.  So much better than the Ford add on one.  I have heard good things about the 2013 one that is built into the key.  Features that I would love to have on my aftermarket one but still want the long range due to how far I park from the building at work.

... If you use the fob to twice (step 1 in the imaged pages below on a '13) Ford factory system will run 20 minute (if it is at the default 10 minutes).... In the summer I set mine to 15 min for air conditioning. Don't know if the 15 will double, haven't tried that one.

Good info on the Viper system!

donk- the best thing about the viper besides the 2500' is the chimes it makes telling you it's starting the car. my co-workers start moaning & groaning about me showing off!!!!!!!!!!! & bigmac thanks for info on my ford one, so far wife hasn't said anything but got what i need if she does.

I'm not sure going to another remote start is an option right now. If I would have known that the Ford 1 button remote start was such a dud when I ordered the 12 SHO I would not have got it. I'll see about disabling the key fobs and making them administrative keys will work.

I feel you on that.
Non factory options should be explained more clearly!  Hope going to admin keys helps!

If anyone might be interested, I may have a 2-way Viper remote start setup for sale soon. I bought it for my wife's A4, but after about 8 hours of trying, the local audio/electronics shop (Viper certified) said it won't work with her car (typical German complex stuff).

I've searched for a way to add remote start while using the original remote, then stumbled upon this. They make many different modules that do this, though the one below is one that has been getting good reviews and sells quite a lot of. It allows you to use the factory remote, pressing the lock button 3 times to stat the car. Im sure the range isn't even near comparable to the Viper though it should be the same as the OEM remote.

I spent a little time looking at the product and before you buy, make sure it is compatible with push button start....  I don't see that referenced anywhere and even saw some language that made me question it.  Keep us posted, as great find - if it works with pushbutton start.
