Title: Looking for part #'s
Post by: FracaSHO on December 20, 2013, 05:36:47 PM
So I got my Christmas bonus today. I the wife lets me keep some or all of it, I will be buying presents for my SHO.   I have a short list, and won't be doing anything major such as upgraded turbos or meth. Here's what I need for my 10' SHO:

1) K&N intake. I can't find one for the 2010, only 2011 and up. Will that work? Part numbers for either year?

2) Eibach springs. I found 2 different sets on autollicity.com  I can't see the difference between the 2, except for price. Part # anyone?  Anyone know a reputable shop where I can have the springs installed in the Chicagoland area?

3) This is an opinion question. Corsa or Stainless Works exhaust?  I like the sound of the Corsa more, but SW is cheaper.

I also have PPE catted downpipes on my list, and plan on a tune from LMS. About the tune; should I:

A) have LMS send me a tune with the mods in mind? I have a mac and don't think I will be able to upload new tunes they send me, so I would need to get the right tune from the start.

B) add the mods, CAI, exhaust, downpipes, then go to LMS to get a custom tune?

Thanks.

Or C) have LMS send me a tune with the mods I add, and get a custom tune in the future?

Sorry, I can't edit the post for some reason.

BPD has a great guy for the spring install if you want to go to Manhattan, IL  (Past Joliet)

3) Corsa

Get a custom tune at LMS.

Edit-Actually, check with LMS and see what they can do for you regarding added mods.  Then maybe go out there later.

He actually moved his shop from Manhattan, to near the intersection of U.S. Route 30 (Lincoln Hwy) & Renwick Road in Plainfield.

I've been with him for nearly 10yrs now, & he's top notch all the way around. Plus great pricing to boot!

I have all Mac's as well with MyCal touch screen tuner. All I do is pop out the SD card and copy file sent from LMS into the proper folder. As for the other devices you could format your Mac to run windows and do a dual operating system. Pretty simple to do your Mac already has a program built in called "BootCamp" just need copy of windows.

Knew there was something I liked about you crash!... I still have my Apple IIe from 1979..it works.

Seriously, Bootcamp requires a reboot... will things work in an emulator like parallels?... It's more than the tune, it's the data logging apps.

Ha thanks, once you go Mac you never go back. Never tried parallels years ago when I looked into it didn't sound very stable and crashed a lot. I ran boot camp right after I bought 1st Mac to run MS money mainly and I never really mind rebooting. Even now I am thinking repartitioning again to run windows and be able to data log and be able run tuner software. And since upgrading my MBP with a SSD a reboot only takes about 30sec.

I'm jealous... waiting to replace my MBP... going SSD then..... It's an order of magnitude quicker R/W for sure!  Bootcamp would make the best sense with that set up. :thumb:

FYI... You're right about the Mac... I'm addicted there too... got a Mac Pro, MBP, 2 27" iMacs, a 21.5 iMac, all the handhelds. I told you guys I was a nerd in my profile/intro.  :pc:

I wish I would've held onto my Radio Shack TRS-80 & Tandy 1000.

MS DOS was da bomb.

Not to forget gaming on Colecovision was an experience in & of itself.

Oh wait, oops..... part #"s

I Officially got the OK from Mrs. FracaSHO to use my Christmas bonus as I please. Voided warranty, here I come!

But seriously, what gains/ET's should I expect from K&N CAI, Corsa exhaust, PPE downpipes (maybe), and tuned by LMS?

This is what to expect.  More is possible, but questionable.

K&N=0
Corsa=0
DPs=20?
Tune=45 WHP (4+/93 on my SHO)

The K&N doesn't surprise me. I'm looking for that turbo sound. But no power gains from the Corsa?  Does that apply to all exhaust systems?   $1,000+ for sound only isn't worth it. Seems like I'd be better off with the downpipes and keep the stock exhaust.

4DR has a list of what he got and his opinion of bang for the buck performance mods.

Not to contradict those with more experience than I have... but here's some info I accumulated on CAIs

Both K&N and Airaid claim gains... Airaid has dyno proof on 2013 SHO of 9 WHP and 15 ft/lbs wheel torque (per email from them after I asked.
K&N claims gains... IU think it's like 15HP... but they they never responded to my inquiry.
Hennessey also claims a lot (like 25 hp..... but they have been know to exaggerate and they want 10x as much as most CAIs cost.

You could ask Corsa for dyno evidence.

The K&N claims gains but I feel that is negated by warmer intake temps.  Still looks and sounds great.  The cat back (any) may help some if you have DPs.  That's kind of why I said you "may" get a little more gain than zero.  In short, easiest and cheapest power gains will be tune and DPs.

Thought this might be a good topic for new owners to review:
I'm going to rank these by my opinion of best mod by power per dollar spent.
1. Tuning - you can pick up 30-70HP here pretty easily depending on what fuel is available to you and if you want to run race gas or not. Figure around $500 with tuner. The lower octane you can run the lower HP you an pick up thus the range. If you really want to maximize your power with tuning doing a dyno tuning session with your tuner will pick up another 10 to 30HP (IMHO) but will cost you a few hundred dollars more. If you're looking for ever HP safely this is the best case scenario.

2. Meth injection
- you can pick up another 30-60 HP here depending on how aggressive you want to get with timing and your tuner. Cost between $200 and $1000 depending on how fancy you want to get with controllers, extra bottles for storage etc.

3. Turbo upgrade
- If you have a tune and meth injection (my suggestion) or an aux fueling solution (discussed later) you can upgrade your turbos. Worth another 30-? ??? (most HP now is 600WHP with aux fueling)HP. Currently the upgrades upgrade either your compressor wheel and/or add an aftermarket wastegate. There is also a full turbo upgrade coming this fall or winter so no one knows the true maximum output of the turbo upgrade scenario yet and how much power the block will take. Currently $1500 to $2000 for the two stock turbo upgrades, and $2200 for a true turbo center section upgrade.

4. Downpipes
- luckily multiple companies offer these now and they're getting cheaper, between $700ish and $1000 for around 20ish HP and quicker spooling of the turbos.
5. Exhaust - $100ish (remove 3rd cat, resonator and mufflers with straight pipe) to $1000+ for full stainless catback exhausts. Another 20ish HP here.
6. Intake - jury is out on this one, we've seen these drop ET/MPH from doing intakes but hopefully we'll be coming out with a new intake tube per turbo with a cold air or sealed stock style box soon. $200ish to $700

Optionals not normally used (my crazy mad scientist mods)
Nitrous - I've personally ran a 75 shot on my Flex and picked up .6 in the 1/4 mile. You can pick up a used kit and controller on Craigslist pretty cheaply and install. For all brand new gear it can get expensive. $250 (used parts) to $$$$$ for new.

Auxiliary fuel system -
I'm the only one who's built one so far, to replicate with what I know now around $2800. Gives the ability for unlimited fuel without the HPFP sagging under load. Needed in the long term for the true turbo upgrade or if you want to run E85. This includes injectors, dual in tank fuel pumps and a modified intake manifold or intake spacer (working on this one)

E85 or E85 mix -
Auxiliary fuel system required for this one as the stock system can't handle ANY E85 mix without running out of fuel. E85 let's you increase the timing massively and run "hotter" boost while cooling the intake track off as well. An alternative to running alky/water injection but a true fuel. Requires dual in tank fuel pumps to replace factory pump. This fuel has allowed me to get to 600WHP on just a turbo upgrade and downpipes/cutout.

Exhaust Manifolds - Now that I've hit 600WHP, the small size of the factory exhaust manifolds is starting to get in the way, need to find a way to replace stockers, this might open up a way to also install a T3 turbo swap.

Water to Air Intercooler - 600WHP has caused me to start looking hard at the factory intercooler and replacing it. An aftermarket water to air will be the best scenario as there's just no good way to fit a big air to air in the front of the car. I'm guessing at the current 26PSI I'm at that I can pick up 30-50WHP here.

Dual-in-tank fuel pumps -
Auxiliary fuel system required for this one as the stock system can't handle ANY E85 mix without running out of fuel. E85 let's you increase the timing massively and run "hotter" boost while cooling the intake track off as well. An alternative to running alky/water injection but a true fuel.

That's all I've got for now, if we see more items we'll add them in the future.

That's the same one I got from the same place.  K&N doesn't list the 2010 on their site either.  I really don't know why not.  Shoot a PM to TSS and see if he knows anything.  He has one on his 2010 MKS.  foster6A has one on a 2010 but I haven't seen him around.  Maybe you can email him.
