Dear brothers and sisters of this forum

It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of my car, aka "Blue Balls" as a result of a deer getting in my way about 3 weeks ago.  This forum was a fantastic resource for all things performance, maintenance and general DYI from the day I bought my MKS.  Honestly, this forum was one of the reasons I bought it 3 years ago.  Just wanted to give a shout out to all the contributors and their input which I absorbed over the time I had that car.  A resource to every question I ever had for my Ecoboost.  All the best to everyone on here.

It's not very often a vehicle is totaled out from a deer collision.  What as the amount of damage that caused it to be a total loss?

It's not very often a vehicle is totaled out from a deer collision.  What as the amount of damage that caused it to be a total loss?

It was a 2010...it didn't have much of a chance...

A 2010 with any miles is worth 10-12 grand and it doesn't take much damage to rack that up pretty quickly in these cars.

It was a 2010...it didn't have much of a chance...

If all the airbags deployed that right there can just about do it.  One of the top reasons cars get totaled these days is due to airbags.  They save lives, but the cost to replace airbags is extremely high and takes a huge chunk out of the amount allowed for a insurance repair before the ins Co declares it totaled, I think they will pay no more than 75% of vehicle value to fix it?  or maybe it is 50%?  Throw a few grand into airbags and poof, not much left for frame/body, electrical and paint.

I think the electrical part is the worst.  Always something going wrong afterwards.

Sad story about Blue Balls! I smoked a deer with a suburban once. Amazing how much damage they can do.
The impact was so soft! To add to the insult, he $hit all down the side of the car and the windshield.

Unfortunately, being from MN I know all too well about deer collisions.  Usually, when they're hit with a car they go up and over.  Radiator, AC condenser (along with CAC on our cars), sheetmetal, front door or two from the fenders being pushed back into them, windshield, lights etc. etc.  The airbags don't go off normally.  SUV's and trucks seem to take a bigger hit from them since they plow through them.  I vaporized a small 90-100lbs. yearling years ago with my Dodge Ram going over 80MPH.  Never even let off the gas as it ran right out of the ditch into my path.  Thank God the airbags didn't go off or I probably wouldn't be typing this right now.  My wife hit one with a Saturn Outlook a few years back.  It didn't look too bad and still wound up costing $6,000+.  It's a shame that a decent car winds up getting totaled out like this nowadays.

I was ok, fortunately must've been just under the threshold of where the airbags would deploy, so really looked pretty much cosmestic but not so...frame bent in 2+ inches and pages worth of trouble codes.  As the bodyshop put it: "we could fix it but you wouldn't want it back"...RIP killer of STI's and Maserattis.  Look forward to hunting with my new R-spec!

Yes, Genesis rspec 5.0...went back to my 1st love of a V8 rwd format.

Thought I'd pass along some info that I gleaned from the internet and from my buddy who used to be an adjuster.

-the 1st offer is just that, an offer.  You are not obligated to take it.  If you decide to decline it, be prepared to back it up with similarly optioned vehicles w/ similar mileage feom auto trader or blue book (black book in Canada)

-don't be a jerk, it won't get you anywhere.  Be courteous but firm.  The person on the other end is usually a recent grad and they get paid by moving through your file as fast as they can and onto the next.  They are overworked and the ins company wants to get you out of their way so it's in their best interest to give you a fair deal off the hop.

-be prepared to mention anything that were add ons that did not come with the car.  Those are yours and you have the right to be re-imbursed for them (no, not the Ming vase in your trunk).  In my case after my 1st offer, I mentioned that I had snow tires and they went back and noticed my car was well-optioned as well so that helped my case as well - though incidentally (not that I'm complaining).

So you might be wondering what I got...auto trader listed similar vehicles around 11-12k (I had over 180 000 km's) on the odo.  They offered me 17500.  I said woo hoo but then mentioned my winter tires.  24 hrs later that became 20500.  I shut up and signed as fast as possible, though it's worth mentioning the black book value was about 18000.  The body shop also mentioned they tend to pay out more for higher-end cars.

Though I hope no one smokes a deer on here, hopefully this can be useful if ever you're in my position.

Oh ya, I've played this game a few times.  Drag your feet all the way through the process too if you're in a position to.  Like you said, they want to clear the books.  Make it hard for them.  Be a nice, courteous, passive-aggressive asswhole.  And don't feel bad about it either, they sure don't.

I wonder how many people don't know this and just take the first offer?
