Front Turbo Leaking

Ok... so I have been battling a leak at the return lines on the front Turbo... replaced lines 3 times iirc... now it's leaking through the v-band which means the seals are on their way out but I'm not getting smoke out the tail pipe yet....

I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this but trying to get opinions... I'm leaning towards just throwing another stock Turbo at it... reason being as I'm not sure I want to dump money into a built motor to support ATPs until there is an upgrade to the PTU/trans... the CHRA from EPP seems like a decent option... dunno... I am torn...

I would toss a stock in there and call it a day

Your reasoning is sound, stick with the stocker.

Maybe the CHRA's. Do they have better built internals?

have you considered the Gearhead upgraded turbos? don't remember the exact specs but they're slightly bigger than stock and offer good power gains without taxing the fuel system or drivetrain. there's a couple guys up here running them with good results. IIRC price per pair is 1600-1800 and you won't NEED to upgrade the block.

i'm sure if you email matt through the website he can give you full details and let you know availability. he rebuilds them from old cores so quantities are sometimes limited. i do know they use a 39mm inducer and are $1800 after you return your cores.

Mere curiosity, I'm not interested enough to waste his or my time with an email.

3 transverse 3.5's, 70K+ accumulated miles, and 6 turbos later I've yet to have any turbo related issues....knock on wood...not to mention those tiny turbos paired with Brad's tuning have slayed giants.

If I were to change my mind I'd probably choose EPP upgrades to support the forum.

AJP turbo

Not sure this will be very insightful but thinking out loud...I do think there is something to be gained safely with larger turbos....Although I'm not sure it would make your car any more enjoyable...Personal taste maybe.

Since it's the front turbo and probably the easier job I'd probably just throw a stocker back there.

BUt if you had to rip it all apart to do the rear turbo I'd upgrade.

I don't think you'd have to do trans and PTU upgrades with bigger turbos....The upgraded turbos no matter the brand I think essentially use the same size or same housings but are machined to take larger wheels...So I would not worry about losing spool since the stockers are lightning fast anyway so you could afford to lose some there.

But if you kept all things equal and ran the same boost I think you would just gain HP on the top end and you have plenty of fuel up top anyway...So maybe you would lose peak torque or just keep it the same and I think torque is the killer anyway.

The larger turbos would give you more airflow and that's the power....And you have meth anyway so I wouldn't worry about the fuel

I am not sure? Mike B. says they are good but he sells them... I have not heard of anyone running them... they seem a good middle of the road set...  I don't mind rebuilding both turbos... lord knows I have abused them enough to where it wouldn't hurt...

If I knew someone or saw dynos/datalogs with them...

x2

It's roughly the same work to change upgrade stockers vs swap turbos, though swapping is probably an hour or two quicker. Price is 50% higher at 1600 vs 2400 but without knowing gains from each it's hard to know if the 800 is worth it, or truthfully if the 1600 upgrade is on the table from a 'worth it' stand point.
