Any issues running methanol injection on a non tuned car?

6500rpm

Overall I'm happy with the performance of my 2013 SHO PP as a daily driver. As a daily driver I'd like to be a bit of a minimalist on mods for now. From real world experience as a new car fleet tech I see quite a bit of oil in induction systems (cars under 35k mi) and it's an area of concern (founded or not) for a daily driver direct injected engine.

The plan at hand is to install a McNally catch can, and in the spring as part of a 40k mi service replace the plugs, thermostat, and map and possibly add methanol injection. No so much for huge power gains, but more geared for it's ability to clean items post injection point, reduce intake air temps, and decrease the possibility or pre ignition/detonation. Unlike 95% of anyone taking the time to read this, performance gains at this point isn't my focus, but if I get a bump up without causing driveability issues on a non tuned engine it's not going to hurt my feelings.

My concern would be, on a non tuned engine can methanol injection cause issues with driveability?

If meth injection is turned on, you need a tune to support it.

And, welcome to EBPF. Please do introduce yourself by posting a new topic here

If tuned:  Take note of the strategy code as you return to stock (including 3 bar MAP to 2 bar MAP) -> take car in & get it serviced -> check strategy code when you get car back -> have tuner update your tune if the strategy code has changed -> reload tune -> ENJOY!

People have reported drivability issues even on TUNED engines....I have yet to see a data log with a SHO on meth where the fueling is handled correctly when meth is being sprayed.

The ECU simply does not understand where the auxiliary fuel is coming from and then will correct with stft's and then the ltft's become off....Letting the 02 sensors control the fueling is the wrong way to do it.

The car doesn't like it when the 02's are making huge adjustments and then what happens if your 02 sensors are failing and not working properly? I'd say a car that will run like garbage at best and at worst lead to a failure.

Since you ask ... sure, put up logs of the tune progressions, would be fun to have and analyze!

Maybe I missed it, but I could've sworn the title (and question) of this OP's thread was running Meth on a NON-TUNED car.

How did the topic derail into tuned cars, who runs what, posting logs, blending of E, and blah blah blah...... ??

Just wanted to chime in, for '6500rpm'

I would talk to the people who tune there cars (AJPTurbo, Torrie, LME) - AJPTurbo has already chimed in, and ask why they tune for meth, what changes are made etc.

As AJPTurbo has already said, there are some fueling changes that need to be made to run meth, for the car to be somewhat driveable. I would say Meth=Tune as stated by others, otherwise, there are some mods you can do without a tune (small E content to the tank, a few bolt ons, etc.)

Basic principles of what meth does: cool the air, and help raise octane.  Stock tune will most likely max out (depending on water/meth ratio and amount sprayed) leaving untapped potential in the spray. My take- spraying on stock tune will only realize a fraction of the benefits, but shouldn't cause any negatives.

Unmetered air and unmetered fuel are both undesireable in engines that are precision-controlled.  I suppose a MILD setup might be hardly noticeable to the driver, right away at least.

Asked about monitoring fuel and no tune with meth witch I answered. just speaking from my experience. Did know we couldn't really talk about that here

Yes, the initial question was regarding the install on an non tuned engine, but anything is interesting to me at this point. I've had the vehicle for about 4 months and adding bits as time passes. My objective was for cleaning ability, as I've read a bit I was surprised to see that even tuned may mostly support 100% meth depending on the tuner, not a 50/50 blend which would have been my goal on a more or less daily driver. I think my first engine item's going to be McNally's catch can and probably progress with a mild tune and the associated bits and pieces this spring. That gives me a few months to keep reading, make some calls, and decide what road to take in terms of which tuner. Did it's first oil change today as the new owner and poked around a bit and was happy to see everything's still clean and dry under the car, not much oil film in the induction tubes I pulled, throttle body and plate was spotless and not much discoloration on the visible part of the intake. I might see if I can sneak my bore scope down the runners and see if I can get a read on the valves at this point and pull a few plugs and do the same.
