Miles to Empty - XSport

Just an FYI for anyone curious...

I was running my tank close to empty to change fuel for my next round of tuning. I was out doing some errands today and got to 4 miles to empty, as indicated on the dash, with 8 miles to my preferred station.

I didn't think I'd make it, so I stopped at a nearby station and put in 0.501 gal to get me the rest of the way. The "miles to empty" stayed at 4 miles after putting in the 1/2 gallon. According to my trip meter, I used 0.44 gal to get from one station to the other, and I wound up going 4.7 miles after the "miles to empty" hit zero.

At my preferred station I filled up with 18.709 gallons (splashing out the fill neck) on my 18.6 gal capacity tank.

At least on my vehicle, there doesn't appear to be much fuel reserve once I get to zero.

Good to know. I think my miles to empty is all sorts of messed up currently from going back and forth between pump and E blends before I made up my mind. Cause using my MPG average vs. the miles to empty I get results saying I have a 15 gallon tank even though it should be a 19 gallon tank.

I am always scared when getting below 1/4 tank on any vehicle though, especially since on my mustang the bowl in the tank is drilled out a bit, and below 1/4 tank under cornering, it can have fuel starvation. Plus crap in the tank gets in the system when its that low.

I was running a blend previously and trying to track my consumption using my trip meter and average MPG. I could never get my consumption reconciled when I tried to compare my trip meter vs average MPG and distance to empty vs mpg. They were always off.

Then, I stumbled across the "Enhanced" trip meter in my settings menu:

Settings > Display > Trip Guage > Enhanced


Enhanced mode displays actual fuel used since reset (1.95 gal, in the example below).


If your SHO has this menu, all you'd have to do is reset your trip meter after you've topped off your tank, then see how closely your actual remaining fuel capacity and your average MPG compare to your DTE. :)

I hate to say this but I actually ran my SHO down to 0 miles.  Yes...it will go to 0 and the fuel gauge turn red at some point prior to that.  But I did make it to a station to refuel.

So never fear...it will go to 0 and you can run it for a very short bit before you have to get your walking shoes on or call AAA for a can of gas.

One of the reasons you can run it past 0 is that fuel pumps retain some fuel internally in order to smooth out variances in fuel level caused by cornering, accelerating hard, etc.  It also helps cool the fuel pump.  So it is inadvisable to make this a frequent occurrence.  OTOH, if you have no issues paying for the fuel pump out of pocket, feel free :D

If tuned:  Take note of the strategy code as you return to stock (including 3 bar MAP to 2 bar MAP) -> take car in & get it serviced -> check strategy code when you get car back -> have tuner update your tune if the strategy code has changed -> reload tune -> ENJOY!

On the SHO I've run 17 under zero and had about 1.25 gallons left when I filled up.

No issues turning, never any hint I was about to run out.

I had the exact data written down then I tarded out and threw my receipts away.
