Hey guys!  Currently have a 2015 Explorer Sport for our family cruiser, so I'm a big ecoboost fan, but not too knowledgeable yet on modding them.   The Explorer is mostly my wife's car, so modding is off limits.

I have an 02 and an 06 Mustang GT, but I'm planning on trading the 06 Mustang for a Taurus SHO or a Lincoln MKS.

So looking to learn a good amount about modding as once I get a SHO or MKS, I'll mod it.  Any tips on what to look for buying one of these used?  I bought our Explorer new.

Welcome aboard the EBPF Ryan, what year SHO or MKS are you interested in?not quite sure how much you want to spend but a 13+model would run you in the low 20's and both are great cars IMHO and best of luck and thanks for joining.  Z

I'm going to look at a 2012 MKS (ecoboost obviously), and a 2014 SHO today.  So I'm open minded on year, but won't go over $30k.

I know interior wise it looks like the 13+ has more features, but I've been assuming drivetrain is mostly the same.

Welcome to the community, Ryan!  The more Ecoboosts in the family, the better :thumb:  You should definitely be able to get good units (SHO or MKS) for $30K or less out-the-door.  If you can get a CPO'd unit, I would highly recommend that because then you also have the option to get an ESP plan (check online dealers like Flood, Lombards, etc for best pricing).  But SHO or MKS, you can't lose!

If tuned:  Take note of the strategy code as you return to stock (including 3 bar MAP to 2 bar MAP) -> take car in & get it serviced -> check strategy code when you get car back -> have tuner update your tune if the strategy code has changed -> reload tune -> ENJOY!

Awesome and Welcome! I would look at the MKS if you already have interest in it. It was the same or less for an MKS of equal year and mileage in my area as the SHO. I ended up finding one for a VERY good price and no one with a SHO could touch it. Personally I would look at 13+, should be no issue getting an MKS under 30k with low miles. Mine was a 13 with 20k miles and I was well under 30k.

You can get ESP on non CPO units, you will just need to pay for a used car inspection and the plan will cost a little more. Anything found that isn't fixed prior will be considered pre existing and not covered. The smart bet is to take it for the inspection before you buy it.

I think a low mile 2010-2012 SHO/MKS with the full gen 4.2 brake swap represents an excellent value.

Thanks for the tips guys.  The ESP isn't really a big deal to me, as I plan on modding the car so I'd probably void half the coverage anyways.

I worked at a repair shop in my college days, so I'm comfortable doing most normal repairs.

I'll have to look into the brake swap if I end up with a 2012 or earlier.

Here it is.  Immediate plans are to remove that pin stripe and get the windows tinted.  I wish it had the 20" polished wheels, but oh well.  Has the 201a package that gives it plenty of the fancy stuff, navigation, self parking.  Can't believe how comfortable the seats are!
