Interesting side note on GM/Ford transmission collaborations:
GM was supposed to handle the successor to the 6F50/55 transmission for transverse applications while Ford would create a RWD transmission for both companies.
Ford produced the 10 spd automatic first found on the F150 and GM uses for its higher output Camaro and new GM half ton trucks (with the 6.2L V8). so obviously both companies found the 10 spd suitable.
However, GM did make a 9 spd auto for transverse architecture to replace the 6F50/55 and has used it in nearly all their new FWD/FWD based AWD vehicles.
But...
Ford was apparently not happy enough with GM's new 9 spd auto's fuel economy and some other benchmarks, so they updated the 6F50/55 into an 8 spd iteration to handle transverse platforms - first seen in the new Lincoln Nautilus.
