2015 Taurus Exhaust Upgrade?

Hey all,

I will be getting a 2015 SHO shortly, with the peformance package, and am sure it will be a bit too quite for me (I am used to my Mustang with flowmaster 40s and my truck(being traded in) with glasspacks).

That said, the factory exhaust is 2.5" correct? or is it 2.25"?

I was thinking of getting a pair of 18" glasspacks from summit (these are what I have on the truck - http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-630812/overview/) and they offer them in both 2.5 and 2.25 inch. Then I was thinking of getting an x pipe to weld in place of the 3rd cat/resonator (http://www.summitracing.com/parts/jex-sxp3ss/overview/)

Do you guys think this will work? I have a shop near my house that has done all of my welding for both of my exhaust systems for pretty reasonable prices. Any comments or suggestions on a different route? I also was thinking of getting some nice 4" exit, blacked out tips to go along with this (if I can find some)

The factory exhaust is 2.25",so basically you would need a 2.5"fitment of your choosing, the Magnaflow 2.5"X-pipe sounds more feasible.  Z       http://www.summitracing.com/parts/mpe-10791/overview/

This is 2.5" http://www.summitracing.com/parts/jex-sxp4ss any reason to go with the magnaflow other than brand recognition when comparing the two?

Also the 2.25" glasspacks will work then? So what is the reason for 2.5" for the X-pipe rather than 2.25" like the rest of the piping?

If your considering a cross over (Xpipe)both are great products, but Magnaflow does come with a lifetime warranty, not quite sure about the Jones though, also you will need a 2.5 inch diameter X-PIPE so you will be able to slide it over the oem piping for a proper weld, BTW there are quite a few members here that have had great results using the 2.5 inch X-PIPE, best of luck

I will probably be in the minority here but here's my opinion. These are sleeper cars. No need to advertise that you are coming or going. JUST GO!

That said, unless the car is truly tire burning pavement ripping monster, keep it subtle. These cars have a nice purr when you put your foot into. Besides, you can't hear it from outside while driving, so who cares what it sounds like to others. But the inside tone...... oh boy!

My install. Catted DP, Magnaflow 2.5 X-pipe, 3rd cat delete, all else is factory.

I thought about keeping it in the sleeper status, and I still may, I just really like the way my current F150 rumbles at idle/start up and the way it sounds when you get on it (and the gurgle that comes with deceleration). And I love the way my mustang sounds as well, and that in both cases, I can be heard comming home from a few blocks away. I will definitely try out the factory system for a bit, probably atleast a year or more, but wanted to know if I had other cheaper options, since the catback systems I have seen cost alot lol.

thanks for that, that makes sense, and yeah I understand about the warranty thing, I was just curious cause its about 1/3 of the price initially. I will make sure to keep both in mind.

F150, Mustand and SHO. 3 entirely different vehicles for entirely different purpose for entirely different segment.

A Ford V8 has always had one of the best tuned exhausts in the industry, bar none. An F150 gets so much more focus than these Taurus cars. The SHO was a test bed for ecoboost. And only a couple transverse applications. That fact alone changes what can be done with the exhaust.

I've stated before that unless you spend some serious cash, you will not get these cars to sound like a V8. The upcoming Ford GT has best exhaust for this engine, then again its targeting an entirely different audience with fewer cost constraints.

The fastest cat in the world (cheetah) cant be heard. And IF you do, its too late!

Oh, I know a V6 will never sound like a V8, and the F150 sound wont replicate for sure, but my mustang is a 3.8L V6 (till I find the time to drop in my 4.3 and the turbo...) and has had divorced (true) duals with flowmaster 44s since I first got it, and it sounds pretty good IMO. And I just really like the way glasspacks sound, plus the looks people are sure to give when a taurus has a nice rumble to it.

I would never...  And if glasspacks and an X sounded like crap, I would almost undoubtedly return it to stock mufflers and leave the x pipe for the 3rd cat delete, or pony up and get a full corsa system or similar.

Derfdog here are the measurements of the stock mufflers, 16.5"X 6" and would get a descent pair of mufflers that fit those configurations especially if you have a good welder as you mentioned earlier,to me personally the Corsa cat back exhaust is a good custom fit direct bolt on unit but quite frankly just way over priced for my taste, just my 2cent,(pic's below of my stock setup).  Z

I was also able to verify the correct width needed to install an aftermarket muffler, the stock unit is 2.25 and you will need a 2,5" as mentioned above, hope this helps any.  Z

Thanks so much Z! Once I get the car and look into it more I will measure to see if there is some room in front of the mufflers to allow for something a little longer (the glasspacks are 18" long rather than 16". If not I can always go with a 14" glasspack and a longer tip! Thanks again for all of the help!

After doing many different exhaust configurations first hand, including different sized piping, configuration of piping, and different brands of mufflers/resonators I've learned a lot in regards to the EcoBoost exhaust system when it comes to sound.

If you're going to modify your stock exhaust I highly suggest leaving the OEM mufflers intact and untouched as they do a great job in preventing dreaded cabin drone. The best thing you can do to the OEM exhaust is a modification of the "X-pipe" mod:

1. Cut out the resonator and third cat as you would per the x-pipe mod
2. Insert a 2.25" dual to 3" single y-pipe right after the flanges for the beginning of the OEM cutback
3. Use a 3" in-out Vibrant Ultra-Highflow SS Resonator
4. Come back into another 3" single to 2.25" dual y-pipe to mate to the rest of the factory exhaust system.

So you are essentially doing the X-pipe mod though a different configuration of it which will create a unique sound and kill any rasp.

Here is an example below to show the y-pipe to the single resonator though it did not go back into the OEM configuration and it is custom all the way through.
