DIESEL FUEL LUBRICITY ADDITIVES STUDY RESULTS - 2007

"The purpose of this research was to determine the ability of multiple diesel
fuel additives to replace the vital lubricity component in ULSD (Ultra Low
Sulfur Diesel) fuel."

"As diesel fuel is further refined to remove the polluting sulfur, it is
inadvertently stripped of its lubricating properties. This vital lubrication is a
necessary component of the diesel fuel as it prevents wear in the fuel
delivery system.  Specifically, it lubricates pumps, high pressure pumps and
injectors."

A Study of Fuel Additives for Direct Injection Gasoline (DIG) Injector Deposit Control (2000):

Abstract:

We report on a comprehensive fuel additive study where two different detergent chemistry types, Mannichs and polyetheramines, are ranked with regard to injector deposit control in a research direct-injected gasoline (DIG) engine. The engine used was a conventional dual-sparkplug, 2.2-liter Nissan engine modified for direct injection using one of the sparkplug holes. The engine was run under 20% rich conditions to accelerate injector deposit formation.

The two detergent chemistry types are shown to perform quite differently with the Mannichs showing superior performance. The Mannich detergent chemistries can reduce the DIG injector flow loss after using Howell EEE fuel from a high of 11.23% to a low of 3.14% whereas the best polyetheramine detergent chemistry tested reduced it to 8.17%. One of the Mannichs was further tested in a year 2000 specification gasoline with 150 ppm sulfur, and a North American type gasoline with 420 ppm sulfur. The detergent lowered the flow loss from 6.67% to 1.66% in the former and from 10.36% to 4.5% in the latter fuel. Clean-up was observed with a Mannich detergent when used at a clean-up treat rate. Flow recovery from a dirty-up level of 9.25% flow loss to a more modest flow loss of 2.77% was observed, a clean-up of 70%.

The kinetics of deposit build-up and the role of gasoline detergent additives in controlling this build-up are outlined. A mathematical model to describe the observed kinetics was developed and found to fit the experimental data very well.

Lubricity of Reformulated & Oxygenated Gasolines (1997):

"In the past few years there have been a number of compositional changes to gasoline to comply with the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments (CAAA). Such changes have included wintertime oxygenated fuel programs in carbon monoxide non-attainment areas and year round reformulated  gasolines in certain ozone non-attainment areas. Reformulated gasolines also contain oxygenates (MTBE or ethanol). These compositional changes to gasoline have prompted some inquiries about any possible reduction in the lubricity of gasoline.

The lubricity requirements of gasoline are generally much lower than for diesel fuels. Diesel fuel pumps operate at much higher pressures than their gasoline counterparts and rely on the fuel for part of their lubrication. Gasoline engines inject fuel upstream of the inlet valves and therefore operate at lower pressures. Nonetheless, there have been anecdotal reports of fuel pump failures, in recent years, which some have attributed to low lubricity gasoline.

Because fuel lubricity has not technically been an issue for gasoline applications, little research work has been done in this area. In fact, there is no standard industry test for determining gasoline lubricity. Most researchers use a modified version of test procedures used to assess diesel fuel lubricity.  Consequently, there is little published technical work on gasoline lubricity. Among work that has been published, there are conflicting results.  For instance one technical paper found that both aromatics and the oxygenate MTBE enhanced lubricity.  In yet another study, gasoline containing the same additive gave slightly less lubricity. This would seem to imply that other variables are at play and may indeed be more important. Work by Ford Motor Company found that reformulated gasoline with oxygenates and high aromatic content gave slightly lower lubricity but concluded, "These data suggest that the lubricity characteristics of CaRFG and variations of it are not unusual or markedly different from other commercially available gasoline."  Still other work exploring the lubricity benefits of detergents stated, "The incorporation of oxygenates does not appear to significantly improve lubricity and may well detract from it", while yet another study found that oxygenated fuels may provide better lubricity. Obviously these constantly conflicting results make thorough assessment difficult.  To further complicate such assessment, fuel lubricity is affected by a number of other factors including detergents and other additives as well as sulfur content of the fuel."

The lubricity of ethanol-gasoline fuel blends (2010):

Abstract
In this work the lubricity of several ethanol (hydrated or anhydrous) / gasoline
fuel blends was measured by using a conventional HFRR tester. Tests were
carried out at 25ÂșC with no water vapour pressure control, according to the
ASTM D6079 standard. According to the results the range of variation of
the mean wear scar diameter was small among tested fuels in the range E-20
to E-85, indicating that the addition of ethanol, anhydrous or hydrated, did
not impact significantly blend lubricity. The addition of hydrated ethanol
(96% v/v) slightly improved blend lubricity in comparison with the addition
of anhydrous ethanol. The higher mean wear scar diameters, lower fluid
film traces and higher friction coefficients obtained for all tested fuels, in
comparison with the typical values for diesel fuels, indicate the necessity of
using lubricity additives when gasoline or ethanol / gasoline blends are used
in new engine technologies requiring higher pressures in the fuel injection
system.

Lubricating Aspects of Automotive Fuels (book excerpt)

"The history of fuel lubricity is associated with
problems in engine performance as liquid-hydrocarbon based fuels must possess a
minimum of lubricating ability to be able to protect high-pressure injection pumps and
related fuel supply equipment from wear. The topic of gasoline lubricity has recently
become more urgent with the introduction of direct-injection gasoline engines, which will
necessitate high-pressure gasoline injection pumps, a development that is most likely to
place considerably more emphasis on the lubricating ability of gasoline, accelerating wear
especially in rotary distributor fuel pumps. According to pump manufacturers this loss of
lubricity may be the difference between fuels from a controlled laboratory environment and
a cost-conscious production environment."
