The problems with the longitudinal engines thankfully do not seem to occur as frequently with the transverse engines, but it could be a game of sheer numbers. Most folks do not have buildup issues with the PCV system or in the CAC, but those who do have good luck with solutions such as lower volatility engine oil, catch cans, etc. Modifying the CAC definitely has potential as a solution if the vehicle suffers the stutter issue, but it certainly should not be left open to the elements. As BiGMaC suggested, put a petcock/drain valve on it. You could also work with your dealer and see if Ford would spring for a valve cover replacement in this case.
