AFE intake for Explorer Sport

Anyone taken a look at this intake by AFE? http://afepower.com/shop/details_new.php?partno=54-12622&filter&menu=gas&engine=3.5L&searchtype=vehicle&make=Ford Truck&model=Explorer&year=2013&engine=3.5L&&brandID=53 Its for the 12-15 Explorer sports but from what I understand the intake and airbox are the same on the SHO and MKS so it should fit. I know that the general consensus is that the intakes don't help on these cars but I like the design of the AFE. It works with the lower half of the factory airbox and replaces the intake tube up to the saxophone. It looks like it would be really easy to make a lid and make it a sealed unit. What do you guys think?

Lotsa reasons to get a CAI.... Sound, appearance.... However, I personally would not buy a CAI that I knew I would have to modify to prevent degrading performance.

I wish AFE would make a system similar to the sealed unit they have for the 3.5 f150s. It is basically a factory airbox with a big cone filter inside and increased flow. It looks to be a well designed setup.

I like the design of the AFE systems better than the mdesigns, it looks like it would be able to flow a lot more, it looks like AFE offers most of their systems with an optional lid so maybe they will offer the lid for the Explorer sport setup. I just don't get how that air flow would work. To me it looks like a wide open gap would be between the air scoop and the intake

I contacted AFE and was told that a lid should be available for this kit soon. So this would basically be like using the factory airbox with a huge cone filter and a bigger smoother inlet pipe. I tried talking them into making a saxophone pipe replacement setup but that seems to be a no go at this point.

Regarding the saxophone, you might contact bpd as he did an entire custom intact... It's still a "one of"

It would be really nice to get a big player making a replacement of some kind so it would be available to all the transverse 3.5's same setup should work for EXsport, SHO, and Flex. I think a good number would purchase an intake to turbo piping kit, as it seems that is the biggest restriction in our stock intakes.

Agree... If there is an intake restriction it is the saxophone. On my car we were unable to show any dyno difference between the intact OEM intake and filter vs the entire intake completely removed so only the saxophone was carrying air to the turbos.

Is there a parts diagram site that has a exploded view of the intake / turbo? I tried to find one to understand the restriction and if there was a way to fix it.

I don't have one... Maybe take a look at bpd1151's post on his "one of" custom dual intake and piping. The saxophone is non-linear and tapering with a 180 degree bend.
