On Wednesday after exiting the highway and coasting through a turn I attempted to accelerate and the car shook so violently that it felt like I jumped a curb, but it only lasted a second and then it drove fine a couple miles to my house. After I got there I looked under the hood and saw what looked like oil near the trans, so I dropped it off with the dealer and sure enough I get the call the PTU has failed internally, but no news as to what would have caused it.

Just hit 22,000 miles on it to.  Hopefully they check and see if it caused any damage to the trans when it locked up like that

Could of been fluid leaking from the PTU vent hose, caused by it being loose, mention to your service advisor in regards to TSB-13-9-16 only affects the 2013 model and hopefully you get that issue resolved and there is no internal damage, failure and good luck and keep us updated with the fix.

What mods are done to the vehicle?

Just an airraid intake is all i have done. Figured id run the warranty out for a bit longer till I did anything else, pretty happy i waited.

Thanks, that could have been what i saw with the fluid but they've said the PTU is done for and they ordered a new one. At least they set me up with an F-150 for this and next week while they are working on it.

Sorry to hear about the PTU issue, glad they are taking care of you.  Did the dealer ever verify the halfshaft issue does not exist on your SHO?

If tuned:  Take note of the strategy code as you return to stock (including 3 bar MAP to 2 bar MAP) -> take car in & get it serviced -> check strategy code when you get car back -> have tuner update your tune if the strategy code has changed -> reload tune -> ENJOY!

Sorry to hear about your car man, hate when stuff breaks.

So the ptu is just a part of the transmission?

No it's a separate part but bolted directly to the trans just like a transfer case on a pickup

I'm actually surprised they gave me a rental. Last time I had to leave my car they told me that since I didn't have their rental coverage or an extended warranty I was on my own for a car. They inspected the halfshaft about a month ago while I was in for the License plate lamp recall and they said the it was fine.  I also had the hub clicking issue as well and they fixed that.

I was planning to replace the oil at 30k but its surprising they haven't revised the lifetime interval on these.

There is some possibility that the PTUs are being underfilled from the factory, and when you combine that with the demand put on them by the already low "normal" volume, it's not a good situation.  At the very least, have the dealer make doubly sure the fluid level is correct.

WOW!!!!!  That looks freakin nasty.  If FORD says that looks OK, that's freakin nuts.  After seeing that, going to get mine to the dealer ASAP.
