So today I gave the SHO lots of attention. I changed the oil (OLM said 33% remaining but there was about 6700 miles on it) and the PTU lube was also changed as much of it as I could (about 35k on it). Both of these will go off to Blackstone Labs later this week for analysis. I'll post the results when I get them.

I also took off the chrome 20s and put on my other OEM 20s. I Plasti-dipped them a couple weeks ago and finally got around to putting them on.

Oh, and the SHO got a bath. :)

I'll post pics with the blacked out wheels and the lube results when I get them.

I am a big fan of oil analysis.

The oil that came out of my explorer sport when I bought it,was in bad shape. The OLM showed it at 50% . I am glad I changed it early!!

Looking forward to your results.

Looks great!  OLM not so useful?  Looking forward to the analysis results :)

Samples sent off today so I hope to have results by the end of the month. (3 days to the lab and then some time for Blackstone to run the tests)

Stay tuned...

Eager to see the gear lube UOA. I've got a sample of oil from my first (and only) SHOil change. Just been too busy (or is it lazy?) to mail it off.

Here's the reports from Blackstone. Motor looks AOK. It seems I used 5W-20 last time. Ooops. Looks like no harm done.

The PTU report is far more interesting. I think there was some schmutz from my sampling, but the last bit about the heat damage is EXTREMELY uh...  interesting.

I've had this car about 10000 miles. No track time or racing, although several interstate runs from PA to MA. From all appearances the PO (Previous Owner) took very good care of the car.

Could it be that the heat in long interstate slogs does a number on the PTU? I'll be changing it again around 50k miles (15k from now) so we'll see what that says at that time.

This stuff brings out my inner engineering geek!

Thats scary. My SHO is all highway miles as well.  My PTU gets flushed on the 30th. Maybe i should send a sample to the same place?

Appears to confirm my theory that the very minimal amount of oil in the unit badly overheats, likely continuously, to the point of (eventual) total degradation.
The big question is, is your SHO performance package equipped?

Unless I am mistaken, the question still lingers - does the aux water cooling help cool the unit (and the oil) and help prolong lubricant life?

Just curious, what was your method for changing the PTU fluid? I took mine to the ford dealership I bought it from and they told me they would have to pull the whole trans out and split it. Sounds like an unnecessary plan of action for just changing the fluid.

I think only the 2013+ go the aux cooling/drain plug in the PP/popo vehicles?

There is a writeup for 2010-12 SHOs here:

Thanks for the details here. Pretty much confirms our beliefs that this "life long" fluid in the PTU is far from living up to that statement.

I think I still have a jar of this PTU fluid sitting around from when I changed it at 32 k. If so I will send it in to be analyzed too.
