Hmm. I see sub zero temps often.  Do I need to take precaution?

Dan,  did you have OEM tstat?

I would highly recommend not going WOT in sub 40 degrees.  The air is much better causing the car to run lean/detonate.  A lot of times you won't hear the detonation until its too late.

I don't understand why that is an issue if the oil is warm. The car will compensate for the denser air by requesting less boost if I'm not mistaken.

At least that's how mine behaves.

In temps below 0° WOT is a definite no no , doesn't matter how "warmed up" it is .

I feel like if that were true, it would be clearly stated in the owners manual.

Unless of course we are speaking strictly about tuned cars.

Why take a chance with WOT at sub zero temps with the MUCH higher probability of parts breakage ?

I may be wrong , but how many drag strips are operational at these temperature extremes ?   Something to ponder IMHO .

When I put on my snow tires, I like to pretend I am driving a rally car in the snow. Is that bad? ;)

Maybe we should switch to a HAI (Hot Air Intake) kit at colder temps?  Remove the Shoboat mod on the Airaid?  Ideally, engine & trans should be at operating temp to gain max performance.  If anything, if the engine is at OT and trans is not, I'd expect something in the trans to break and the ECU to throttle back best it can on sudden demand.

Coz nobody can disprove it, my pet theory relates to humidity & condensation forming a storm front within the combustion chamber.  Maybe we should line the intake with water absorption crystals and dry out the air :)

If tuned:  Take note of the strategy code as you return to stock (including 3 bar MAP to 2 bar MAP) -> take car in & get it serviced -> check strategy code when you get car back -> have tuner update your tune if the strategy code has changed -> reload tune -> ENJOY!

I have a war fund set aside for any contingencies. Not like having a nasty motor built would be the worst thing in the world.

Maybe I should run the typhoon in the winter so the engine is fed lots of nice warm air, lol...

Just watch your knock on the first few cold days to see how it acts. If it knocks then yes you have potential damages if you don't change the variable that is causing it. If you don't see knock at sub 0 Temps then it is in fact safe to drive at wot till you are content. I think everyone forgets what these engines are capable of. Yes they have weak spots, yes tuning makes these weak spots even more prominent. It's up to you to make the correct adjustments.

In stock form these engines have been used in the farthest reaches of the north. Not just daily driven. They have been pushed to the limits with great success.

Lol that's all I have to say. Maybe K&N should change their marketing to winter HAI.
