Okay I've had a 170 degree thermostat installed for some time...at least I think it's a 170 Tstat.  I never really noticed before but I've been watching everything temperature related with my Torque gauges lately and from a complete cold start it warms up right to 185 and then sits there for a few minutes...then dips (assuming it is opening briefly) but recovers to 185...it will site between 185 and 190ish when cruising at a steady state with plenty of airflow.

Is this what you guys are seeing with 170 degree thermostats?  That would seem more like stock behavior...and yes I am sure I put the "new" thermostat in. :)

What are the ambient temps when you are taking your readings? At idle with the AC on mine sits around 185, when I start moving it will stay around 180, dropping occasionally to 176 and peaking around 182. Today it's a little warmer about 85-90 ambient and I saw temps a bit higher, but not much. When I had the stock stat average temp was 196-200.

I live in the same climate as you but have the stock 180 stat in.  My temps run about the same as yours or maybe even a bit lower.  I have seen as high as 195 when stuck in traffic but it runs 180-185 when moving at a reasonable speed.  I have an MKS that might have a larger grill opening but I am not sure about that.

Once fully open, I am not sure there is ANY difference between the flow of a 170 and a 180 stat.  The 170 should open sooner but does it open larger?

Ambient is sadly 65 degrees in MN today. Cruising at 70 it stays around 185...

I've got the 170 and my numbers are almost an exact match as ShoBoat's. With the 170 I'm running about 10 degrees cooler than the 180 stock stat.
