I think the cover setup is a more professional and secure design. Weather stripping is a good quick fix but not a permeable one I bet.

IMO. :)

The cover is a better solution for sure, most of the higher end intakes are sealed with some type of window to see the filter. I did purchase some plexi to make a cover, however this may prove to be more difficult than I thought. On the SHO the filter is taller than the box at the front of the unit. I will play around with it and see what happens. But if the new taller blade weather stripping works then bonus.

Bendable aluminum maybe? Like the metal you use on your house for overhang facia and freeze?

Heat gun, bend plexi? Or use low weather striping on one side and the taller stripping on the front side?

Some great ideas! Short term I took the weather stripping off my K&N and put it on the Airaid . The K&N uses a flatter top design to it's weather stripping. Which allowed easier placement of the foam that I placed on top of that. I have to admit in person it doesn't look all that bad. I wish it was black however it was the only one I could find that expanded to 1 inch. This stuff is more like memory foam and is designed for high heat applications. One step at a time eh?

The difference in this simple mod is crazy, IAT is dramatically reduced the biggest change is when heat soak sets in. I parked the car today and it sat for about an hour. Got back into it and IAT was reading 57C (135F) ambient was 26C (78F). As I left the parking lot IAT started to drop right away. I had to step on it to get into traffic. IAT went from just over 37C (100F) to ambient in just a few seconds. And then rebounded back a little higher when I let off the gas. I believe that for every 10F the temp drops you gain 1/10 of a second in the 1/4 or about that.

It sounds like its behaving like OEM now which is awesome. After reading that intake test the only other thing you might want to consider is an extra source of fresh air from the wheel well.

And maybe a cone with an open end....

The cone with the open end sounds interesting, I would have to source the filter. The Airaid has an offset to the mount, unless someone else makes a replacement for it with a power stack opening like the S&B filters it may prove difficult.

The data log from my recent test with the new seal in place. I will see if I can get a log without the seal. Ambient was 25C, this was after a 1 hour heat soak. on a 5 min drive.

You asked for it! here is the Airaid with the stock weatherstripping, from the graph notice when I step on it IAT goes up, not down as the 1st graph. Just for clarification, note the labels for the graph from top to bottom.

Between 204 and 223 you can see a wot run from a stop. Look at what happens to the intake temp, it soars.

IAT2 by sho.boat, on Flickr

IAT1 Temp (At the air cleaner)
CAC Temp After the CAC before the TB
IAT2 in the intake manifold.
TP throttle position
VSS Speed in KM/H
Boost in kPa

From this graph pay notice to when I open the throttle, temp actually goes up. This is even when the car is at speed, so the majority of the air being drawn is from the engine bay. So there you have it, I would say that this is definitive that the Airaid is capable of drawing in cold air.  What a concept a CAI that draws in cooler air.

One last thing, you can see the exact opposite right around 283 in the first screen shot. The ambient today is less at 19C it had just rained.
