Thinking about selling my SHO

Hey guys and gals. I'm thinking about selling my SHO and picking a beater up for a while to save some cash. I plan to buy a new mustang next fall or next spring, and it would help to not have a payment till then.  My car is a 2010, I just hit 80k. I have it lms tuned, with airraid intake and exhaust done.

What are your thoughts?  I owe 18,100 on it and I plan to swing by carmax tomorrow just to see what they would offer for it.

When it comes to selling your car, CarMax, AutoTrader, etc. should be considered your last options. I'm willing to bet their offer will be somewhere in the neighborhood of 12-13k. Trade-in book value for your car is between 16-18k depending on condition and most places won't give full trade value, so don't expect as much if you're trying to sell to them straight out. The last time I inquired about selling a vehicle to one of those places, my car had a trade value of 14k and they offered 8k. These types of places prey on individuals who are desperate and need to get rid of vehicles quick. If you can carry it a little longer, I would suggest trying to sell it to a private party after having it professionally detailed. Advertise with high quality photos. You will likely have better luck by returning it to stock as well. If not the exhaust, at least consider removing the CAI. A lot of people see performance add-ons as a red flag, despite the fact that real car guys actually take really good care of their vehicles.

Best of luck to you! I hate going through the process of selling a car!

I think you will be better off trying to go the route of a private sale if you have the time. I have received the most money from my past vehicle sales by selling on the vehicle specific forums.

Yea, its summer time, and it sounds like you have some time before you want to get rid of it.  I wouldnt rush.  Take it to CarMax, but list it for at least $4k higher than the price they give you.  When I sold my last car I listed it on Craigslist and cars.com.  Got hits from both.  I'd list it soon though, people tend to want fast cars in the summer when they can use them.

Car Max is a joke. The cars they sell are overpriced and they don't negotiate. I tried to negotiate with a Car Max salesman once and he told me to leave!  And their offers for buying your car are insulting. They offered me $8,000 for a car I ended up selling a year and a half later for $15,500, to a dealership!  Auto trader isn't free, but I've successfully sold all my cars trough auto trader website.  Put it on auto trader if you are going to sell. Don't do craigslist, you will get robbed or scammed.

i actually think CarMax is the industry standard when it comes to selling prices of used cars.  of course they may not offer you the best price for your car individually, but their selling price (minus a little less) for the same model with similar mileage is pretty much what you can expect to get from a private buyer.

other dealers consistently use CarMax quotes when dealing with their own customers.  the only margin you will pickup, and the buyer will save, is from cutting out the middle-man.

the days of people getting great deals on used cars, or sellers making huge-out of the ordinary- margins, are over thanks to the internet (unless one or other is supremely desperate).  its simply supply and demand now...

I wish you luck, I don't think its a very big audience that want Sho's.  I've had only one call in the two weeks mine has been listed.  My mods might be scaring some people away, but I guarantee it gets driven like a creampuff compared to 99% of the other cars out there.

I sold my last car to CarMax and bought my SHO from CarMax, so here is my story:

CarMax does not use Manheim, KBB or NADA guides, they use the pricing of vehicles they sell directly from their lots. This means that in your area, if the CarMax is selling a car that sells quickly and for top dollar, you will get top dollar when you sell it to them.

Sold my 2012 Acura RDX to them, this is how it went:

I was looking for a best case scenario of $29,000. I went to the Acura dealer I bought it from, had all the service done there, and they offered me $27,500. I went to the Cadillac dealer, they drove it around, offered me $27,000. Frustrated, and thinking CarMax would offer me even less, they came back with $30,000. I Was incredibly surprised, but the RDX sold very well out here in CO on their lots.

I went 4 months without my own car, and carpooled with my wife while I searched for my new car, decided on the SHO, looked all over town and they were all right around $28,000 - $29,000 at that time. I went online and decided to check CarMax's prices, and the SHO's that were local were all in line with that pricing, but I noticed that in Southern California, they were selling for around $2,000 less. This is because they price the cars for their market. With their transfer service, I bought my SHO for $25,997 and paid a $399 transfer fee to get it out here.

SoCal has no premium on AWD models, as it is SoCal and has no need. Out here in CO, they sell for a premium.

A few other things with CarMax: if your car has over 100K miles, or is much older, they will give you dirt for them. That is due to the fact that they won't sell it on their lot, so they give you auction pricing. If your car doesn't sell well on their lots in your area, they will give you dirt.

I have bought over 20 cars in my life, and CarMax was by far the best experience. No, they won't haggle with you, and the price they give you when you sell your car is set in stone based on what the market value for them off their lots are.

Not sure what the SHO would go for, as Darkside said, not too many people know what the SHO is or are looking for it. CarMax is a 7 day pricing offer, so you could check there first, then compare. A lot of dealers will work with you to get over what CarMax offered, so you can use it as a tool.

I just want to clarify one thing from my earlier post. When I mentioned avoiding AutoTrader, I meant you should avoid the "instant offer". I've successfully listed and sold a car to a private party through AutoTrader and that experience was great. It was the instant offer that was a joke.

also, they will shy away typically from ANY mods.............you would likely be better off putting it back to stock and then selling the parts separately.   I had a friend that had to sell his truck..............he had aftermarket wheels on it.    They told him their offer could be 3k better if he had the OEM rims on it (even though his aftermarket setup cost a ton more)................he put the stockers back on and sold the aftermarket ones and netted about 4k better than he would have selling it to them as was.

With a car like the Taurus/SHO, I'd guess the stocker, the better, as far as trying to get potential buyers to take it off of your hands. It seems to be a very casual car for a lot of people, mostly housewives, quite amazingly. I've had several middle aged guys in upper model BMWs and Audis and such, ask me about the car, because he was considering one for his wife. 8|

Anyway, I think if you have time and patience, private sales are always the best bet. Plus, you mention you're attempting to offload the car, in order save some cash. A private sale seems like the logical choice.

I stopped at carmax today and they offered 15.  I'm not surprised or upset. I'm not in a rush to sell, I love the SHO.  I owe 18,100 right now on it, so I have time to sell it if I need to.

You owe it to yourself to at least put it on this forum. It is free to do this and you already are appealing to the viewers of the ad since they are here.

I'll have to get some good pics up and pace an ad up on here. I don't think asking just over my payoff would be out of line.
