What have you towed with your Sport?

Just wanted to ask what you guys have towed with your Sports?

The biggest thing I have towed to date is our 24' Formula on an aluminum tandem axle.  That said, it was from the ramp back to the house, as we live on the water and the boat stays tied to the dock during the spring, summer and fall months.  The sport felt well planted and wasn't bothered at all by the additional weight behind the vehicle, and on the tongue.

Since then I've lowered it with H&R springs and am wondering if Ill run into any issues rubbing in the rear,  Ill be sure to report back soon as the boat will be going back in the water towards the end of the month!

That said I'm about to place the order for a new car trailer, and will be trailering my Evo on some decent road trips.  The GVW is right under 5000, GCWR is 10,400 and max loaded trailer weight is listed at 5,000.  I know the Evo and trailer will be under 5,000 (~3500 for the Evo and ~1200 for the trailer).

Who here has trailered this kind of weight for any distance?  I know its not the "ideal" tow vehicle for what I'm looking to do, but I'm interested in hearing thoughts, comments, concerns etc.

I'm afraid I'm not going to be a lot of help here...other than a girlfriend, some kids, or my a$$ from 0-130, I can't say I've hooked anything up to it. ;)

Mine isn't a Sport, it's a limited. But I pulled a trailer full of gravel and it had to be at least 4000lbs for about 100km with no issues. It felt pretty good, on the expressway I barley noticed it was back there, except when I sped up. I could have used the EB at that point;) I pull trailers regularly with it.   However mine is not lowered.

Wow that's quite a boat to tow with an Explorer. Do you know how much it ways? I'm thinking it's a good thing it's just from the dock to your house, haha.

It is an old heavy one, I haven't been able to find an exact weight but Id imagine the dry weight is around 4,300lbs and likely very close to 5k on the trailer.  I know this was pushing it, and I would never do it for any length - but going from the ramp to the house it handled the load just fine.  I'm not sure I'd want to have the 90 gallon tank full too though!

Here are a couple shots of it, including one with our ATV trailer hooked up.  Excuse the hull, it gets a bit slimey sitting in the water for 7 months!

I think my biggest gripe so far with trailering and the sport is the simple fact that the vehicle does not recognize when a trailer is plugged into the 7-pin (backup camera, tow haul etc.).

Doesn't look like it is sagging to much with the atv trailer. I think it will be fine with the atv trailer i towed a razor with my 2012 limited up to my cabin with a lot of steep climbs but haven't with my sport yet. Not sure if that helps

No the ATV trailer is pretty light (1600 or so) and it's only got 2 quads in it.  It tows that just fine, we've been on plenty of 8+ hour trips with the sport and quads in tow.  A properly loaded tandem with a proper hitch (proper height) puts very little additional weight on the receiver.

I guess I'll just dive head first in, order the trailer and see how the sport does with a car behind it.  We'd probably upgrade to an expedition had they done more to the 15's than just stick the 3.5 EB in there.  I planned on replacing my DD with a new truck come fall anyway so if the sport doesn't like towing a car well just use the truck!

What kind of car trailer are you planning to purchase? Covered? Open? I've always been a fan of Featherlite.

Just wanted to post this up for you guys, picked up my open aluminum tilt trailer, it weighs in at 1200lbs, my evo is a bit over 3300 wet.

Today I trailered from NH to Watkins Glen, NY with the new setup.  The sport handled it perfect, trailer brakes are a must with  load this size, but it didn't feel dangerous or out of control at all.

I averaged 14.5mpg over the 400 mile trip; there was a lot of hills/mountain terrain between here and there, I'd say speeds averaged 55mph most of the trip with top speeds of ~70mph for a couple hours.

For some reason it won't let me upload any more pics from my phone but when I get back home I'll post them up.

I also forgot to mention I am lowered with H&R springs, no rubbing or any other issues.  Getting the car at the right point on the trailer is key.

How was your sway Cooper?  When I towed my racecar (it's and 80's turbo Dodge so about 850lbs lighter than your EVO) I had sway pretty bad. Turns out there were two problems, the I15 outside of Vegas is grooved very heavily and not very strait, the tires on the trailer were just tracking in the grooves.  Second problem was that the tongue on the trailer had the pin hole drilled too far back extending the ball much further than needed. I was able to redrill it almost 2" further in on the tongue which helped a bunch on the next trip.
