Please use a quality 75w140 gear oil for the ptu. something better than the motorcraft oil. Funny thing is the factory fill on my town cars is good for over 300K but at 30K its BURNT in the ptu. gonna suck mine out and add a drain again and refill with amsoil next oil change. I'm curious to see what it looks like when i get 5k on it.

Educate me please. What makes Amsoil better?  ... Additives?  Synthetic oil? .....
Not a fan of any gear oil.... Never had a PTU in a car before...

Neither have I.

Ford may argue that discoloration of the lubricant in the ptu is nothing to worry about but i certainly disagree. the discoloration comes from somewhere. either thermal breakdown or debris contamination. I'll be checking my ptu fluid here at the next oil change to see what it looks like and send some off for analysis. What i do know is on the fleet trucks i service, amsoil lubricant (we buy in bulk) has kept reoccuring failures at bay.

Unfortunely i don't have hard evidence yet to back my theory up.

If everyone who changes their PTU/RDU fluid gets an analysis done and provides that along with oil brand/mileage/vehicle used, we could have our own informal study going!

Excellent idea... Seems like it's only $15-$20.  Does anyone remember the name of the lab I've seen used by one of our members?  We could send it to ford... etc.
I would agree with the unproven theory... and if it's not thermal then either something gets ground up, something chemically interacts with the PTU oil,  or something is dissolving.  Some of the PTU pics look like they were pour full of chocolate syrup!

Update:

I've put 8000 miles on the car and recently started smelling gear oil after a spirted drive and parking the car. I racked my car yesterday and saw a little wetness by the ptu vent. I pulled the plug. I was NOT HAPPY. I need to take a pic of the fluid that came out but it looks like gear oil that has 100K on it that came out of my town cars. I sucked it out with a fluid extractor filled it with redline 75w140 (it was what i had in my garage) twice. Took it out for another spin and i don't smell it anymore. Confirmed it after 8 back to back runs at the drag strip tonight that the gear oil smell is gone. The PTU got a work out, car kept spinning the front tires till it would send power to the rear all night. Nice to see it went into the 12's tonight.

Wow.  Glad you took care of it :)  Only 8K on the new PTU?  Was it really new or rebuilt?  Did you check the level in it after installation?  How much did you pull out?  Standard PTU vent, right, not the upgraded one?

Is it a PP equipped car?

To me it seems like it is definitely thermal breakdown, worse on the non PP equipped cars (or whichever has no aux cooling).

Generally, Motorcraft gear lubes are considered pretty good.

What year is your car? The reason I asked is that on 2013 plus, the car sends power to the rear as soon as brake is applied with throttle. So wheelspin should start in the rear and then bleed power forward when the rdu hits its power limit.

itsacrazyasian

Mines a 2010 non PP car.

I will agree the motorcraft 75W140 lube seems to be pretty good as the factory fill goes 300K in the town cars. I do notice they discolorate around 100-150K but these cars are always loaded.

It was a totally new PTU. Dunno about which vent it was, its right on the unit with a little cap on it.

Got about 14oz out of it, took 16. oz. Too small of a capacity for sure.

97k miles, had a gear oil smell out of the blue. I took it to the dealer for a key fob issue and told them about the smell, I had the forum pulled up on my phone already because I knew what was happening. Got a call the next day saying the PTU is leaking and will be replaced under warranty. My car is a 2010 PP, untuned at the moment.

Nice!  Make sure they check the fill on the PTU before handing it over to you.
