DJE's TStat Swap

I swapped in my 170 degree T Stat tonight.  It went surprisingly well.  Took about a half hour plus a half hour testing.  Here is a picture of location. (Sorry, I didn't think of taking a picture until I was just about done!)  Pulled the Typhoon tube out.  Then used 8mm socket with short extension, 1/4" drive to remove the two bolts.  Got my cup under it and wiggled it out.  I filled the small cup three times.  So I had one blue cup full and one small clear cup full after draining.  Probably lost 2-3 ounces at most.  So, say I drained about 20 ounces and lost 2 of them.  Then used a small screw driver to break the stock T Stat free from the housing.  Popped the new one in the engine with o-ring out and reversed the process.  I snugged up each bolt and then tightened them up.  I was a little concerned because the o-ring that came with the new TStat was thinner than the stock rubber washer but, after a good testing and a couple of checks, there are no drips.  I drove around the block a few times, checked it, went out for a 5 mile run, checked it then did another 5 mile run with a couple WOTs and a good screeching launch (salt). Then a final check.  It looks like the gauge is slightly lower than the dead center it used to be.  No problem getting heat although it may have taken a bit longer the first time.  No over heating.  Here is a pic of the location of the housing and of the cups I used.

If tuned:  Take note of the strategy code as you return to stock (including 3 bar MAP to 2 bar MAP) -> take car in & get it serviced -> check strategy code when you get car back -> have tuner update your tune if the strategy code has changed -> reload tune -> ENJOY!

Mine is just waiting to go in.  In the old days a new gasket would gave been mandatory. I have not seen any mention of a gasket so I'm assuming there is none. Could this be right??

It uses a rubber/silicone o-ring.

Ahh!  So that would be a reusable o-ring. Nice!

No heat on the way to work today.  Funny, it worked last night.  I did get a little air pop when I opened the resevour just now.   Maybe it burped.  I'll see in the morning.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!  Know it's cold there!

Thanks!  I will probably be fine.  I didn't run it with the cover off.  And I did get a little air release when I took the cover off at work.  May take a couple burps.

SHOdded

These systems are so sensitive!  Hope the heat comes back on pronto.

I hear ya!  I know that recently a couple of guys have had the same problem and it eventually worked its way out.
