Road Trip

I will soon be heading out on the first road trip in the SHO, this is one of the reason I bought a SHO for the comfort and the zip. I run a lot of marathons and ultras and am trying to get all 50 states done. I have all the states relatively close to me done so my travels are taking me farther on the road. I will be heading for Florida early Wednesday morning for Skydive Ultra in Clewiston. I will jump out of an airplane and then get out of my jump gear and run 100 miles. My oldest son lives near there with his girl friend so I'll be spending a little more than a week with them too.

So looking forward to this trip, about 2600 miles round trip, hang out with the kiddo, get out of this freezing weather for a while and not to mention that I get to parachute for the second time in my life and also run my second 100 mile ultra both in the same day. I am hoping to finish the race in under 20 hours, my first one I finished in 21 hours and 32 minutes, not bad for a 51 year old man heading rapidly towards 52.

I hope the cars is as comfortable on the long drive as it has been on the short ones and maybe I can get to track down there and see whrat she'll do instead of having to wait until April or May before the tracks are open here.

Wow!  That's amazing!  Best of luck for setting your new record.  Typical high self-expectations for an Ecoboost Equipped Vehicle Owner!

I took my SHO on a 3200 mile round trip from PA to Texas in November; did 25mpg at average cruise of 80mph. I am tuned to run 93 octane with almost 400awhp at wheels. It was super comfortable and even with H&R Springs; I had no issues.

I did two 12 hour days; went from West Chester, PA to Nashville, TN and then Nashville, TN to Austin, TX.

You should do fine in the car.

Gotta love it!!!!  "economy hotrod!" ... that's comfortable with easy access.

I agree, I was quite impressed.

It was awesome not having issue finding 93 octane.

So you drove it with the 93 tune on the car? I am a little concerned that I may not be able to find 93 octane the whole way so I will carry the tuner with me just in case I have to load the 91 tune.

Yep, I ran 93 whole way and had no issues. I stopped at Valero and Exxon stations only.

I did have my tuner in case I had to drop down to 91 or stock.

Not a bad idea... You can google where to get 93 octane by station (brand), city (location), etc. ahead of time and plan your stops.

I carry my tuner for that very reason also.  I guess that might show an advantage for the "dial a boost" gadget instead of running an octane specific tune.  Wonder if the gadget is capable of  altering the timing also?

I believe that backing off the throttle will reduce boost just fine.  (Boost is controlled by torque demand.)  That said, I would not depend on anything other than matching the tune to the octane.

Well the problem is not likely really the boost as much as the timing, et.c.

If you put a lower octane in that you are tuned for, you can not go wide open throttle until you get the right tune or octane in the car. It'll run just fine with normal driving with a lower octane than the tune you have loaded in the car.


That said you never know when you will want to punch it so it is better to load the proper tune.

I have to say what a treat is was to drive the SHO to Florida and back. It is very comfortable and handles great. On the ride home yesterday we hit some bad weather as we came into Pennsylvania the snow was piling up and no plow trucks were out for a while on the interstate. People were sliding off the road and banging into everything and everyone. The SHO went through all this without incident and at no time did I feel it was getting out of control. I was able to continue to drive 50-65 mph and pass just about everyone. I had these conditions for about 200 miles as well but made it without a hitch. I am running the all season BFG's that came on the car too.

On another note the skydive was incredible and so was the 100 mile ultra. This old man won the race, yes I was the first finisher and was over an hour ahead of 2nd place.

Congrats on your win in the ultra :thumb:  The SHO does seem to be fairly unflappable on all-season tires, which is really cool for such a hi-performance vehicle!

If tuned:  Take note of the strategy code as you return to stock (including 3 bar MAP to 2 bar MAP) -> take car in & get it serviced -> check strategy code when you get car back -> have tuner update your tune if the strategy code has changed -> reload tune -> ENJOY!

Good job on the jump and winning the ultra. I followed the thread when you started it back in January, I had actually started to wonder(because no update) if the jump didnt go as planned ;-0

Nice to know that the AWD Sho can plow thru snow, not that we get much in SoCal but it's nice to be ready for anything...
