Question for all you Chicago guys?

How do you guys keep all the winter salt from ruining your beautiful rides?  I am tempted to pick up a beater for the harsh winter months.  But don't really have the cash right now. I could sell it but I may not recover all my money. Ideas, suggestions, advice?

Illinois ruins our cars and roads with all that dam salt!

I ran mine though the spray wash a couple times a week using the under carriage wash.  Sometimes it's tough to do when it's really cold. So, if it's say, over 25 do it while you have the chance.

I wash mine by hand, in my garage. I do it whenever necessary, and sometimes even when not necessary.

I heat my garage with a portable heater, and I have a garden hose split off from the service drop for the water supply to the laundry.

I have it hooked up to the 'HOT' water side only, so it's doubly good in getting all that nasty crap off from the car, especially the under carriage.

Have done this same procedure for all of my cars over the years, and it hasn't failed me yet.

Eats up more time in maintenance each week, but wth, worth it to me.

That is until I can afford to have a junk / beater type car of my own.

But my oldest got her license this year, middle one will be getting hers (well at least her permit) next year.....

So I am kind of obligated to purchase a used car for them, rather than me first..... oh boy, I could see the Wife's comments now if I came home with a beater for me, prior to purchasing a car for the kids.

Yikes! :yikes:

That's pretty much what I was thinking. And if it gets too cold, my garage is heated so I could wash at night before I get home.

I have a long time before my little monster gets her license, a little over 15 years, but when she does she can get a job and buy her own car, just like her daddy did.

About the washing of the car; you are truly dedicated. I don't know I would hand wash that often even if I had the time. I think I'll have to stick to the touch less car wash.n I'll just get through this winter and next year hatch my evil plan of talking my wife into a new car for her so I can take over her 09' Escape.

I would also think about putting on a sealant like CQuartz Finest, OptiGuard Pro, Collinite 845 after the wash/clay process (usually good for 6 months to 1 year, at least 50% of that in harsh weather).  Then followup with maintenance washes.  That should significantly reduce your winter-car headaches.

If tuned:  Take note of the strategy code as you return to stock (including 3 bar MAP to 2 bar MAP) -> take car in & get it serviced -> check strategy code when you get car back -> have tuner update your tune if the strategy code has changed -> reload tune -> ENJOY!

I'm lucky enough to have a touch free wash a few blocks from me. They offer a 30% discount for pre-pay so I just load up my account and run it through when ever needed, using the under car wash. Then a quick run home into the heated garage for a shammy off. Keeps me happy enough through the long cold upstate NY winter.

I'm probably building a house next year. My plan was to have a 2 car attached for the daily drivers. Then down the road build a separate "structure" aka 3 car garage for my toys. Problem is the village won't let me do that. I'm pretty sure there are no height restrictions so I may have to stack me like you got. What type of lifts are they? How much do they run? Can I still use an automatic door opener?  What should my ceiling height be if I need enough height to get, say a mustang, above an F-350? Thanks.

Well the 4 post lift run 2k and up for a 8k capacity. Measure the height of each vehicle plus 5 inches for the ramp thickness then add about 7 inches. My garage height is a little over 10 feet. I did get a high lift conversion for the garage door tracks that take it to the ceiling. I also use a jackshaft door opener that mounts on the side.

A friend has two lifts in his garage which is almost 2 stories tall.  He used a commercial garage door opener and also the high lift garage door track conversion.   Unfortunately, he is now down to 3 cars, one of which spends all winter in FL.  Biggest problem is the width of the lifts, which makes them very inconvenient when you park your DD's within them. Almost impossible to open all 4 doors.
