Steering wheel swap to add heated steering wheel

I'm trying to do a little research to see if this is even possible to add on my '14 Limited.   This was an option on the limited for my year, but mine did not come equipped.

Using FORScan, I enabled the heated wheel soft-touch button on the MFT. Probably the easiest part of this.

I proceeded to purchase a heated steering wheel module for $30 off ebay, and found a '14 SHO heated steering wheel for $60 also on ebay.  So I'm into this for $90 in hardware.

Of course, I should have scouted around a bit first. I need to locate where the HSWM goes. I believe it's in the steering column area, but not 100% sure. I need to see if the wiring is present, and if the module gets a response from the soft-touch button.  From there, I need to see if the wiring exists in the column to simply plug the steering wheel in.

My question here is:

1.) Does anyone know the location of the heated steering wheel module so I can see if wiring is present and plug it in. I want to see if Forscan can see the module at that point.

2.)  Has anyone taken their OEM wheel off for a swap or other reason and observed or have photos of the various wiring connectors, and if the heated wheel wire is present regardless of if the vehicle was equipped (and was an available option for the model).

I realize I should have researched this prior to buying hardware, but I didn't want to miss out on getting a heated SHO wheel so cheap.  I'm sure I could always resell.   Thanks

I am not sure about the module, but in MOST ford vehicles they use a standardized harness, with standardized wiring, so the steering wheel should just plug in, and with the proper modules and software activation all should be well.

Good luck!

I assumed the same thing as well.   I figured short of yanking my wheel off right now, if I could located where the module is supposed to mount and see if the wiring was there, it would give me my answer as to if I should proceed with pulling my original wheel off.

Just trying to figure out where that module is!

The module is behind the dash panel above the glove box.

Just reread the OP.  That's where it is on a Taurus, I think it's the same for an Explorer, though.

doesn't look like addn'l steps to remove the steering wheel (heated vs non-heated). Of course you will need to obtain the as-built data for the HSPW, which is currently absent from your car.

If tuned:  Take note of the strategy code as you return to stock (including 3 bar MAP to 2 bar MAP) -> take car in & get it serviced -> check strategy code when you get car back -> have tuner update your tune if the strategy code has changed -> reload tune -> ENJOY!

I believe I can use Forscan to write to the module to program it.  But, you are correct, i'll need to obtain the as-built for it, which I believe I may be able to downloan from Ford's website.

I did find the FSM that showed the HSWM located behind the RH dash trim panel.

I figure my plan now is to pop off the panel, verify the wiring is present, obtain HSWM as-built and install the module and write to it.

At that point, I would assume that pressing the soft-touch button would generate a response from the HSWM that I can see via forscan.  I'd like to get to that point prior to committing to pulling the steering wheel off and hoping a loose wire is hanging to hook up to.

My HSWM is in the mail...so I can't try this out just yet.

EDIT:  This is a '14 Taurus Limited

the underpinnings are still those of a Taurus, SHO or not.  The main question for anything interior related these days is controlling the modules.  SOMEtimes it is actually a wiring issue, such as between a base trim Taurus and an SHO, for example.  On the Gen 1.5 Edge, the SE trim has no wiring for the accent lights/DRLs.  Same can be said about heated sideview mirrors or puddle lights in other cases.

Well, I just removed the RH side dash trim and found the spot that the module is mounted to, but no wiring at all.  Dropped the glovebox down as well and poked around and simply couldn't find anything.

So really that kills this project.

Unsure if anyone wants to pop their panel off and see where the wiring originates from? I'm pretty sure it just doesn't exist on my car, which is odd because the Limited did have it as an available option.

That's a great resource.

Took another look, and C2046 definitely is not present in my car....at least not in an easily reachable location that I can see.  I have no intention of pulling the dash apart to replace a harness, so guess that's the end of this idea.

I will have to take a peek to see if C2280B is present on the driver's side.  Not going to go too crazy though

LOL, $25,000 heated steering wheel.  Worthy of even an F40!
