Title: Re: Cold start rattle!
Post by: ZSHO on September 22, 2017, 08:21:25 AM
I will start a separate Topic on the subject on hand soon.
I unfortunately have been hearing this short one second rattle upon cold start up which has me a bit concerned.

Today was the second time this has occurred in two months and always have used Redline Full Synthetic and Amsoil signature series full synthetic oil along with the Motorcraft Fl -500s oil filter.

I have always changed my oil religiously at frequent intervals and 3K would be max for a peace of mind.
To be continued, thanks. Z

Hmmmmm it's not the typical one second rattle on start up that happens? I can't remember the name of the part ATM...

Ugh.  Rattles suck, unless they are meant for babies ...

Cam phasers.... it sometimes takes a second for the oil pressure to build. Might want to check your oil level. It appears some cars make more noise than others while the oil moves up into them...

That being said, Z knows his car better than anyone, so if it's a new noise then perhaps there is something else going on. Other culprits of that noise based on forum feed back is the rear turbo.

Some have mentioned the HPFP as well during start up rattling...

I appreciate all the replys from ^^^ and only has happened twice in the past few months IIRC!
I noticed that it sounds more like a plastic rattle than a metal sound.
FWIW almost have 2k since my last oil change. Z

so MANY plastic parts on this car.  bellypan, hose clamps, hpfp cover ...  hopefully it is just a fastener at fault, spurred the vibration of an engine at startup.  Doesnt sound like a suspension or mount component.  Maybe check the direct meth system as well?

I was getting a similar noise when using the motor craft oil filter, switched to Mobil-1, poof gone.

Might want to check to make sure your noisemaker is secure. Also any plastic parts that may have been impacted when LMS removed and reinstalled your intake manifold.

Additionally if you can get under your car I would check to make sure that the new Alky pump is still secured, along with the new reservoir that they installed.

Not uncommon for something to be slightly loose after everything settles in after being taken apart.

Just my .02 cents..

I guess sometimes its in front of you and you don't see it!!!!!
I found the front bumper a bit loose which makes perfect sense since having the DPM installed.
Does anyone know how to tighten the front bumper on the 13+SHO?
Its unfortunately getting dark here and will try to tackle it early tomorrow am or will contact LMS,Thanks. Z  :)

May need bumper cover mounting brackets, or new fasteners.  Ever since the transition to pictorial description of things in the FSM, it's a bit hard for me to tell.

Although my pics are still being held hostage by Photobucket, looks like the exact same procedure I wrote up on the bumper removal "How-To" on the 10's through 12's.

Fairly easy job once familiar with it. Fastest I got mine off was 12min.

Good luck Z!

^^^ exactly what he said. There are a couple tabs up top that sometimes need a little guidance and by the headlights.

Fingers crossed it's something simple

This unfortunately might require a dealer visit since it needs some fasteners.
I tried to pushing it in on both sides for the time being. Z

Do you have the part numbers for those? If you need them let me know. Both of mine broke when I took off the bumper for the Alky install.

Total cost was $19 both both sides, and its one bolt holding them in. Super easy to replace.

My guess is they snapped when the LMS guys removed your front bumper and they didn't notice. Although if they don't clip in correct it doesn't sit right... so not sure how they didn't notice. And my guess is that is the only time your front clip has ever been removed.

Just banking my brownie point for when I really piss everyone off one day..

Are you planning on swapping them yourself? If so, I did it by poping out the plastic screws in wheel well and the bottom 8mm bolt.. it gave me enough room to pull the front clip away to swap out that part...

The single bolt is a 13mm IIRC which was odd as almost everything is 8 or 10 for mouldings...

If you run into issue please feel free to reach out! If you were closer I could just swing by and knock it out in 15min...

Update I found the engine cover loose since having my DPM installed.
The engine cover does not sit flush on the engine due to the DPM being slightly higher on TOP of the manifold which makes it difficult to fully secure the cover and only the front two fastner's,insulators can be fully secured which IMO is causing the brief plastic rattle sound upon cold start up. Z

The bumper issue is my fault due to the lower skirt getting stuck on the curb . :banghead:
