Title: Replace drivers mirror glass
Post by: avidmotion on February 11, 2017, 01:50:15 PM
I have a 2013 PP SHO with CPO warranty. I have had the car only 8 months. My mirror has suffered delamination and has turned all black. Ford will not replace under CPO warranty and wants $450 dollars to replace just mirror glass, not the whole mirror unit. Not only is a black mirror irritating it is also a safety issue. I found part number:
AG1Z-17K707-DD which is just the mirror glass with blind spot, but not heated, for around $237 bucks and will attempt to replace myself. Does anyone have knowledge or detailed instructions on how to replace mirror glass? Or know where I can find detailed instructions? Thanks for any help, I am current disabled and financially unable to pay such craziness for a mirror.

They definitely have instructions in the workshop manual how to replace just the glass, but i need to renew my subscription, so I don't have the option to post right now.

It's fairly simple to do though.  You just need to rotate the mirror so you have access to behind the glass.  I believe you just stick a flat head screwdriver in there and release two clips and it should just pop right out.  Simple as that.

If you want, they sell aftermarket mirrors on ebay for cheap if you don't want to buy OEM.  Just need to search around a little bit.

Exterior Mirror Glass
Removal

Position the exterior mirror glass to the full upward and inward position.
WARNING: Place a shop towel between the hands and the exterior mirror glass for protection in case of glass breakage during mirror service. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.

NOTE: LH mirror and motor removed from the housing and viewed from the back to show location of clips and placement of screwdriver.

Remove the exterior mirror glass using a screwdriver to release the tabs starting at the lower outboard side of mirror and continuing around the mirror until all 4 tabs are released.

Installation

NOTE: An audible click will be heard during installation.

Install the exterior mirror glass by pressing firmly in the center of the exterior glass until it snaps onto the exterior mirror motor.

I have done this myself on a 2010 SHO and my 2010 MKS. I realize that yours may be slightly different, but trust me, if I can do it, you can do it. I used a plastic tipped screwdriver just to make sure I did not scratch anything in the process.  I have not clicked the link above, but my recollection was the glass itself was around $140 from Tasca (not promoting them, just telling you where I got mine).  Mine  had the self dimming feature, heated, and had the integrated blind spot mirror. Yours will likely have the blind spot indicator. I would guess the overall cost of yours will be more. But I can't imagine it will come in anything close to what the dealer wants to replace it. And the replacement should take you 10 minutes or less.
