Noticed this the other day and looks like it could be coming from the intermediate shaft area or possibly the side of the case. Wanted to get some opinions before I take it in to the dealership on Thursday to see if they are going to replace my PTU under warranty. The service manager already seemed to think that they would replace it based off the fact that i told him it's leaking out of the top vent but if it's leaking other places I'm thinking that would "seal" the deal. 25k on car
opinions?

that's the plan and doesn't sound like the dealer is gonna fight me on it. also going to see if they'll load it up with amsoil gear lube if i provide it. should last ok if it has good fluid in it from day 1.
might have to zoom in on the pic to see the fluid stains. best i could do without getting under it

well techs looked at the car today and determined it needs a new PTU. scheduled to drop it off next thursday. i was surprised they said it would be a 2-3 day job. anyway no skin off my back since they're providing a rental and the whole deals only gonna cost me a $100 deductible. only disappointing thing is they said they had to use ford fluid and wouldn't use amsoil even if i provided it:( guess i'll just change it after 8-10k @ the first service interval.

Good to hear, I hope they replace seals in the process! Amsoil says run the fluid for 5K to let it break in the PTU, then swap out for Amsoil for the longer duration.
If you want to keep the dealer warranty on the PTU job, you will need to wait 12K/12mo whichever comes first, before swapping fluid, otherwise they may say it was tampered with if another issue arises.
If a job is covered under warranty, there is no warranty except whatever is remaining on the warranty you got the job done with. So I would not worry too much, LOL.

I never knew, thanks for he info!
It's still a "lifetime" fluid if the PTU fails at 25k miles and you never had to change the oil, right?? :/

Officially, yes. Wish the warranty were lifetime to go with.

exactly. and i really don't see ford testing the fluid to see if it's motorcraft or not. especially considering how quick they were to suggest replacement today. Hell, the service manager i dealt with today thought i was dropping it off for replacement today. Lol. i told him i just wanted to verify it would be covered and schedule for the work.

so dropped her off this morning for ptu replacement and ended up having a pretty good interaction with the service manager. the rental car company was in tight supply on fords so it took quite a while to get the rental setup. the manager ended up driving me over(in my car lol) to the enterprise center and we got to chatting for a while. . . at one point i ended up asking him what his daily driver was. he replied "i've actually been looking at these SHOs since i just ordered a turbo upgrade for my A4 and that will end up being my toy". Haha! kind of a stroke of luck as i was quick to tell him how happy i was with the SHO and then quickly used that to segway into asking about how he would go about tuning for his turbo upgrade. after we covered that i casually said "yeah it would be nice to tune this thing but i know it would void the warranty pretty easily right?" haha. he said . . "honestly, keep any mods mild and return the car to its factory tune before you bring it in. there's really no reason for us to go looking into things like that. unless we know it's been done we don't investigate".
huge relief for me to know that! lol
FYI this is the autonation dealership i bought the car from. not sure this represents their general attitude towards things like this but they practically volunteered to replace my PTU. so if anyone is getting unlucky . . autonation dealerships might be worth a try. i'm pretty damn happy with how easy they made this.
then i was put into this thing

it's been kinda nice to have something different but can't wait to pick up my car tomorrow.

Updating the exhaust on the rental while you were under there, I see. Very nice!
