Title: Hellcat vs SHO trade in
Post by: StealBlueSho on October 16, 2016, 10:45:31 AM
Soooo I have a pretty good opportunity to sell my SHO and pick up a Charger Hellcat... Obviously the whole sleeper aspect goes right the hell out the window... But... Still a 4 door... Similar class...

Anyone here have any first hand experience with the Hellcat? Build quality? Overall day to day experience? Stuff I am not gonna get by just driving one at the dealer?

I can read the online stuff all day...and the local dealership is getting a couple in for the show room floor by the end of the month..

Thoughts? Opinions? Flames? General disgust? Overt Happiness?

I've heard build quality has severe differences from vehicle to vehicle.

Knowing it is a V8 with nasty power, it will have a better exhaust note IMO, and probably attract more attention on the street from other drivers and the police.

On the track they are pretty quick out of the box, meaning you will be spending a lot more over all if you want to get deep into the mods, as you will need a cage, etc. pretty quick. Just some food for thought.

Also, fast hellcats are expected.

Fast 4500lb boat, 4dr ecoboosts not so much.

Build quality and longevity ... Somewhat murky waters from what little I have heard.  But if you don't plan on keeping the Hellcat for long, or plan on garaging it, might work out.

Just remember all that power is unless you get slicks for it.  Expect any race you do to be a "roll race"  From a dig you'll be about as competitive as an Olympic sprinter running on ice without slicks.

Didn't realize there were so many quality issues with these cars.. simple Google search yields very unfavorable results... Thats a shame..

Weren't insurance companies really hammering their insured for owning these?

I thought I read somewhere that the premiums were astounding?

I called Allstate my current insurance company, premium was a bit higher, but nothing shocking... I mean going from a 18K ish valued car to a 60K+ is going to be a bump... Nothing to write home about. Thanks though!

Ha! I have heard that before, I was hoping that their premier package would be a bit more stout....

Also due to your tuning I have a buddy that wants to purchase the SHO... It helps when you  embarrassed all the EVO and STI guys on the weekends..

AND I have a friend at the local Dodge dealer who can work a bit of a deal (not much) on the Charger Hellcat... But still tempting...

Get a built SHO instead.  Sneak into bpd's crib now that his is no longer a DD.  Late nights are best, LOL.

well, last Friday night a guy with a hellcat challenger wasn't to happy and then broke it.  Not sure what he did but heard he had busted the motormount a month ago too.  Had to be pushed off the track and on a trailer.  We were both spinning, me not as bad as him but its still quite funny.

For a DD I really like the R/T Scat Pack.  It's not as exciting as the blown Hellcat, but I think it would be a very enjoyable car and have less maintenance/issues.

Having just purchased the Scat Pack, I've been extremely happy with the decision and I'm 222hp short. If I could afford to get the Hellcat, I would jump on the opportunity asap.  That car is on a whole different level.

The 8 speed auto is a dream with its super quick shifts and the transmission in my car has only normal or sport mode...the Hellcat (and SRT 392) has a track mode setting for even quicker shifts.  Actually, the track mode can be enabled using the Tazer OBD-II plug-in module for the Scat Packs.

As for build quality, I do have some minor issues with slight rattles, but my SHO wasn't anything spectacular either.  The V8 exhaust note more than makes up that, lol.  I do miss the AWD launches with a tune, especially the 1st to 2nd gear shifts.

You'll get tons more info at www.hellcat.org (http://www.hellcat.org) if you haven't been there already.

If you want a modern Mopar with more power than a Hellcat at less than half the price, PM me as I might have the car for you.
