Title: Energi 1 Year Update
Post by: jtoddk98 on September 20, 2016, 12:39:51 PM
Welp, that was a quick year (almost a year and a month) since I traded my 11 SHO for a 3yr/45k mi lease on a loaded 2016 Fusion Energi Titanium. Ive put almost 12k miles on the Fusion since then and I recently visited the gas station for the whopping 11th time. I usually get between 1000-1200mi per tank and it only takes $25 to fill it. I have only visited the dealer for a tire rotation at 7500mi, no oil change needed till at least 15k miles which is great.

Why I traded
Getting the Energi was the right move for me at the time too. The Michelin Pilot Sports on the SHO only had a few miles left in them, the car was about to turn 60k so it needed its regular maintenance, and something was wrong with one of the cats that wasn't covered under my Ford PremiumCare Warranty. So if I was going to drop a bunch of money on my ride, i'd rather get something new that I wouldn't have to worry about while I am up at school. (Plus the incentives to purchase/lease an Energi were/still are super good. $6k from Ford and $4k from the gov).

Comparing the Fusion and Taurus (Quality, etc)
I like the interior of the Fusion much better than the Taurus, it feels much more spacious and less cramped. Especially in the back seat. The build quality of the Fusion, in my opinion, is much better too. The doors have a solid "thunk" none of the plastics creak, it just feels "more premium," kinda like a BMW 3-Series.

In conclusion
I believe the Fusion Energi is an awesome "all-rounder." It drives well, it really isn't that slow, saves you a ton of money, and its built well. However, I definitely miss the driving dynamics/speed of the SHO. Who knows, in two years, I could be back behind the wheel of an Ecoboost

Thanks! You should really take her to go test drive an Energi, plus the incentives on them make the Energi even cheaper than the hybrid model. The instant torque of the electric motor gets the car going pretty well.

Curious what your commute is like and what your average mpg is?

I'm guessing that, if your commute is over 22 miles, then it makes more sense to just get a hybrid?  My wife commute is about 40 miles.  Have you figured out what it costs in electricity to travel those 22 miles?

glad you like the new (year old) car

But you're the first person to call the Taurus interior cramped

With the Energi, you get a $4k tax incentive so it actually cost less than the hybrid. I drive around 20mi a day so I don't use gas unless I'm going on a trip. I have found that the EPA underrated this cars EV range. I can get 28mi out of it if I don't use AC and keep the speed under 55. As for my electric bill, i haven't noticed a difference. Turning off your ceiling fans and adjusting your AC thermostat when you leave the house will more than counteract the electricity that the car uses. When I have the car in normal hybrid mode for when I'm on the highway, I get between 40-45mpg depending on your speed.

Haha. I was quite surprised when I first sat in the Fusion, it just feels more spacious. And the backseat in the Taurus was basically useless when I had the seat all the way back as I'm 6ft3.

They sure did! Very impressed with the power train. However, I wish they put more effort into battery placement and size. They kinda just threw it in the back of the trunk. I wish it was more integrated into the chassis like it is on the Volt. It would also allow for a bigger battery. the Fusion has the potential to be the ultimate PHEV sedan. I believe that Ford just needs to put a little extra effort in, they didn't change anything propulsion wise for the 2017 refresh.

They must hate the words "dedicated" and "custom", so they "make do" LOL!  Have you driven a Volt?  How does it compare?

I've driven both the new 2016 Volt and the first gen. The first gen was okay, however it was slow and just felt cheap. You definitely knew you were driving an econo box. The second gen is a vast improvement and it can keep up with the Fusion speed wise. Still, the interior was small and I didn't like the looks. Plus, it'd be a sin to have keys to a bow tie in my possession haha. If all you care about is mileage and making sure everyone knows you are driving a "green" car, get the Volt. I found the Energi to be the most well rounded PHEV out there.

I can't wait until Ford marries hybrids with Ecoboost!
