Title: FoMoCo AWD PTU question
Post by: SHO-Pa on July 04, 2016, 08:38:48 PM
I have a generic question about the PTU for the XSport and Fusion: Do they suffer the same poor cooling and capacity that the SHO does?

From what I recall reading/seeing, it sounds like the XSport has a similar design but I haven't seen anything about the Fusion AWD system. I'm wondering if Ford woke up and put a drain plug in the newer design.

Not sure about the Fusion, but I can confirm that my 2013 XSport has a drain plug in the PTU. The fill hole has a temp sensor, which requires removal of the passenger downpipe to get at, so FoMoCo didn't really make it a whole lot easier to service, IMO.

Just yesterday I completed a drain and fill (2x) on my XSport with 30,000 miles. To avoid exhaust disassembly, I installed an extended breather hose and gravity filled it from up top. It was painfully slow going.

70k on our brand-new-used '14 X Sport.  Was going to do the PTU fluid yesterday but put it off to today.  Planning on using the vent fill method.  Probably going to flush with solvent to clear the vent, then MMO, then 75w80 then 75w140 THEN refill with Amsoil 75w140.  Might be a little overboard on flushing but I have some extra half-bottles stacked up so why not.  I'm sure it can use it.

Whats the easiest way to get the longer vent hose in place?
