Title: EBC pad disintegrated during normal braking...
Post by: jimmyducati on June 21, 2016, 08:21:07 AM
I bought EBC pads and rotors from "a place for brakes" last year, put about 15,000 miles on them and just this morning while coming to a stop on an off ramp, the outside right front pad turns to dust and immediate metal on metal grinding. I bought them from A Place for Brakes and the website says they have zero warranty once the parts are installed.... That is a s*** policy when the issue is clearly manufacturer defect. That, coupled with the week delay in shipping when I ordered the parts "because free shipping items are a low priority", I won't be going back to them for replacements for sure.

Oh man, that sucks!  But isnt their warranty pretty limited anyway?  Lucky to get more than 1 year warr on hi perf brakes.  You should talk with ebc directly though.  I always thought it was 3 mo/3000 miles with them.  I hear they are great at customer service.

keep us posted for sure! That's where I ordered mine and haven't had any issues yet. Although my right front started squealing a little bit this past weekend.... GRRRRRRR

Really irritating, I spend extra money for high quality parts, only to be stranded on the side of the road when they fall apart. I tried calling EBC, got the perpetually ringing phone.

Email EBC...that's how I've contacted them. I'm pretty sure they will answer there...

Inside tip....offer to test out one of the higher performing pads and let them know you will do a write up on it for the masses, they may offer you them at a huge discount, just saying

I sent them a very professional email explaining the situation, and expressed my "hope" that they stand behind the quality of their product by resolving an obvious manufacturer defect.. Fingers crossed.

I recently outfitted my murdered out SUV with their top of the line slotted/drilled rotors, & brand new "orange" pads.

Although slightly different vehicle (& pad)..... no problems thus far.

When I did rock their "yellow" track pads on my SHO (before having upgraded to the Wilwood's) I also experienced no issues with them either.

Even though their "red" pad is a little lower on performance spectrum than either of the above, certainly shouldn't of went "poof" as you've described.

I concur with others, EBC's presented good customer service previously, so we'll collectively keep our fingers crossed for 'ya.

Im going to get a set of cheap auto zone pads to put on the car just to get it home (still in the parking lot where i coasted off the highway). Hopefully the rotor isn't destroyed to badly. from what I can see, its the outer 1/4 inch of rotor that is rounded off from making contact with the pad bed. Ill wait a bit to see what EBC says, if they will replace the pads and rotor I will be happy with that, if not... Maybe one of those "last" sets of wilwoods are in my future?

I'm not the type to reveal my entire hand now.....

Tsk tsk tsk.

Maybe when I return from Costa Rica if I feel so inclined.

That's the way to make the best out of a crappy situation

The outside brake pad was bare metal, inside pad was wearing very uneven.. 1/4 inch on the leading side, 1/2 inch on the trailing side. Drivers side pad has a little less than a half inch inside and outside and wearing evenly. There is a rivet on the top edge of the pad under the braking material that gouged the very outside edge of the rotor. I put a set of duralast pads on the front end and drove 40 miles home, no noise or vibration when slowing from highway speeds. The sliders on the caliper are greased and working as they should, this has to have been a problem with the pad.. nothing wrong with the caliper in any way.

I had this happen to me once.  I didn't install the pads on the clips correctly and the brakes were stuck riding on the rotors as I drove.  The pads were in constant contact with the rotors as I drove and the heat disintegrated the pads.

Even with cheap pads, this isn't normal if everything is working correctly.
