Title: Tried to get the PTU fluid changed at Ford, got a bunch of BS
Post by: black99lightning on November 12, 2015, 04:23:08 PM
So some of you guys may remember me when I posted  more here when I still had my SHO.  Well we still have the Xsport. I had the fluid in the PTU changed twice in the Taurus.  I recently went to the same dealership that changed it in the SHO, and they told me to change the fluid in the Xsport would require them physically removing the unit from the vehicle?  Is this true or should I try another dealership?

Same process as the sho.
Was it the same service advisor?

glock makes a good point about the SA.  Only thing I can think of is a possible difference of cooled vs non-cooled PTU setup?  Even so, I believe 91hybrid has shown us how to get the fluid exchanged on a PP.  So ... IDK!  If nothing else look up the closest BG service center that does driveline service?

I agree, I had a BG shop do mine after Ford refused. They had to flush it out three times to get the gunk out. The guys said they had never seen gummy, thick, black, clumpy fluid like that come out of a newer car. There was 1/2" of material stuck to the magnetic plug.
(2010 SHO, 60K miles.)

Sorry I know this an old thread but want my PTU fluid changed and tranny serviced(no not that kind of tranny! lmao!). Ford dealership is worthless. I have called all the local shops, non have done a PTU fluid change. Xsport has 32k miles on it, hard tuned, high boost miles,. How much 75w-140w fluid foes the PTU take? How about the rear diff? Can I get the plug out without dropping the down pipe? How do you refill the PTU? Thanks

Check to see if you have a lower drain plug.  If so, you can change it thru there,  it's little more messy, but you can do it.  That's how I changed the fluid one '13 PP car.   As for the rear diff, you can suck fluid out the fill hole, or remove the cover.  I made a drain plug for my rear diff to make it easier.

Fill capacities should be in the OM under Capacities and Specifications.  Probably 18 oz for ptu, 38+ for rdu.  Rdu is 80w90 spec.

Look for a shop that performs BG services.
