Title: Ram Air setup
Post by: bamsho on August 28, 2014, 04:19:42 PM
Well I tried my hand at making a homemade ram air set up.  I used to sections of Spectre 3" flexible intake pipe.  First driving impressions seem good.  Throttle response seems little better, even after going into a couple stores and getting some heat soak, car seemed to respond the same, but also been driving the Explorer to work all week, so got used to less power.  I cut couple slits into the lower section to let any water that would happen to get into it a way out.  I can easily remove it if I don't like the results, but in theory it should work, car is getting more air.

Interesting and nice work!  I see in your signature you are hooking it up to the stock box correct?

Yeah, still running the stock air box, I could get myself to cut a hole into the Airaid I purchased.

Interesting and nice work!
Ditto :)  Hopefully you are taking this setup to the track soon?

Nice work Brian... Like Manu I hope to see improved track times!

The stock airbox and filter is not a restriction  My car was dyno'd back to back with no airbox and on lt and only the saxophone vs intact OEM intake and airbox (hood up and fan on the engine) ...No difference!... The saxophone may be restrictive, but it is unproven since unmodified AM intakes have actually posted slower times at the track which were immediately fixed by reinstalling the OEM "saxophone" and airbox.

This is the reason I think Brian may be on to something here.... forcing air into the turbo feeds!

At the very least you should be getting the coldest air possible from down there. Interested in the results.

Sounds interesting!!! If it doesn't prove to help hooked up to the intake, think it just blowing that cooler air towards the rest of the intake tubing could help?

Thats why i hate to say that you see alot of STI AND WRX with that ram air by the lower bumper area by the foglights modded.

I decided to test my ram air setup with a house fan.  Just wanted to see if it actually worked.  Well I could feel the air being forced thru by the fan.  SO in theory this stupid thing should work.  Going to the track tonight so,  we will see for sure.  Remember guys, I'm still running stock downpipes and cat back exhaust.

Well guys here are my time slips with the ram air setup.  First two sets are with the Airaid with the regular blade they send you.  The next two sets are the modded stock box with the ram air setup.  Look closely at what is at the bottom of my first time slip.  I think its works.  Last two slips I twisted my ankle, and had trouble holding the car at the line.  Wife drove the car home, and she really noticed that she didn't need much throttle to get the car moving.  I'm thinking before my next trip to the track,  don't know when that will be, I'm cutting that hole and sealing the Airaid.   Oh I weights the car last night too.  She weighed in at 4255#, I thought if she weighted more.

Great report Brian, Thanks!  :thumb: .... Sorry about your ankle   :sorry: ... I am not surprised that the apparent benefits show primarily after you have 70-80mph forcing air into the new intake.

That sucks about the ankle, hopefully it will be better soon. Very interested on how this mod works with the Airaid.

The first time slip from last night is the one I really want everyone too see.  The car had no time too cool down from the trip to the track, total heat soak.  Too me it works, it was equal to my non sealed Airaid.   60' times are better with the Airaid cause of the bigger and less restriction, but after that I personally think my ram air into the stock box takes over.  Driver need to get his head out of his butt to get better R/T.  Not sure when I will get back to the track to try the ram air into the sealed Airaid box.

Well I cut the hole into the side of the Airaid.  So I hope it works, going to be a b*tch trying to fix that hole so it looks good.

I used a black abs adapter from home depot. It fits in the hole perfectly. I bought a rubber cover and a band clamp so I can secure it and or close it off...haven't tried the ram air setup yet but will hopefully be going to the track this weekend.

I cut a hole in my sealed Airaid to hook up the ram air hose to it.  Just ran at BSD this past Friday night.  Conditions were great, very low humidity and air temps in low 60's to high 50's.  Starting line had amazing grip, which cause couple passes to have wheel hop. They had a low car count, so we had open time trial for 1.5 hrs.  My best run was #2 for the night, with 14 mins between first and second run.  I didn't raise the hood all night, so everything had total heat soak.  The car I ran against was a Nova with racing slicks.   As you can see his R/T, he smoked me.  I ran him down around 1/8 mile then went around him.  Car seemed to pull better with the sealed Airaid/ ram air.
                                              Nova
R/T           .125                         .009
60'          1.877                       1.876
330         5.337                       5.326
1/8         8.250                        8.271
MPH        84.72                       82.69
1000     10.764                      10.878
1/4        12.890                     13.074
MPH      105.65                      101.87

The 12.89 was my best, my second best was 12.95 @ 105.77, but this run experienced bad front wheel hop, so probably would of been better.  To me the car seemed to run better with very little time between runs.  On on another note, took car to a picnic Saturday in the rain, when I got there I opened the hood to check the air back for water or being damp, I found nothing, which was a good thing.

I sense the hood vent mod coming next :) 12.5 easy peasy.
